I am looking to buy an amplifier for my system. I have rega r3 speakers and have recently aquired a beresford dac which i think is great so far (only had it about a day), playing lossless files from my laptop.

At the moment i am using a 10 year old technics amp (SU- A808) and it's doing a surprisingly good job for its age but was only meant to be a temporary measure. The plan was originally to buy a used rega amp as it should be a great match for my speakers and so i have bought a cursa3 preamp off ebay. Since then i have been keeping an eye out for a maia3 but they don't seem to come up so often although i have seen a couple of maia2000. Would there be much difference between the maia3 and 2000 or should i wait for a 3 to come up?

A third option has crossed my mind which is to sell the cursa and look for a nait 5i. I have read good reports of their synergy with rega so should be a good match.

I suppose the sensible answer would be to try and demo these but ideally i would like to buy used kit as the last new kit i bought turned out not to be to my liking although in the demo it impressed me. At least if i didn't like the used amp i could sell it on with only a small loss.

I previously owned a cyrus cd6se and 8vs2 which, for all its qualities, i found a bit bright and thin sounding. I am looking for a fuller sound than the cyrus that doesn't tire in a long listening session but also doesn't lose much of the excitement that the cyrus brought to the system.

Thanks

Probably best to go on a junket down to your local dealer and audition 2 or 3 different amps. I have heard some good things about Rega/Naim combos, but this could end up messy unless you hear the different variations for yourself.

Have you listened to the Cyrus XP series amps? There is a step change in quality from the vs2 series; more weight and better bass whilst retaining the excitement. Certainly not bright...
