new amp and speakers

I bought my amp (Sansui AU-X201) and my speakers (Tannoy S) 25 years ago. How much has technology moved in these areas since then?

I feel that the sound from my bluray/dvd/cd is not as crisp as it should be. Also as I turn the volume control on the amp, I hear a whooshing/interference noise. The cable that connects the amp and speakers is not very thick. I’m sure a thicker would make some improvement?

If I was to spend £250 on a new amp and a similar amount on new speakers, would I notice much difference? There seems to be more choice with speakers these days , any suggestions to help me in the right direction would be a help.

I listen to rock music mostly and my living room is 12’’ by 15’’ by 7’’6’.

I just bought a Yamaha AS 500 amp for £208 at Superfi on offer, normally £228/£229 at Superfi and Richer Sounds plus got Wharfedale 10.1s for £150 I am impressed over my old Marantz PM35Mk2 amp.

Loving the sound with my Yamaha CD and Rega RP1.
