Need system advice

I currently have a Marantz CD6002 through a Rotel RA06 and Kef Q5's. Via silver anniversary XT speaker cable (bi-wired) and Van Den Hul the name interconnects.

Lately i have been thinking that this system is a little flat, maybe lacking in energy somehow. I used to have a system running through a PM66SE, and while that definitely isn't a patch on the Rotel it did have more character. I can boost treble and bass a little via the Rotels tone controls but i don't like doing this as it tends to lose control and affect the balance of the music too much.

I would like to upgrade this system but don't have alot of money (maybe up to £500) but i don't know what to upgrade to bring a decent improvement. I listen to everything from Classical to metal through the likes of Elbow and Paolo Nutini so my system has to be versatile.

Any input greatly appreciated. thanks.

hi .
in my opinion the rotel is very lively amp and the marantz a great player i think despite the revievs your speaker cable is the FAULT. i have rao5 se and m.a. br5 with arcam cd73 i tryed qed cable abd found it to bright. try some black rhodium ast 400 or chord carnival you will get better bass abd pace and some excitment. hope this helps qed is good cable but very bright and lacks the low end drive timing and pace

p.s also this would be a cheap option before you start spending cash on speakers cd or amps, speaker cable is usually the most cost efective upgrade. chord carnival bi-wire is about £ 10 a metre new online and blach rhodium ast 400 or jive or tango bi-wire qabout the same.
