My dad is looking for a new computer, i spoke to him today he is not sure what he wants but thinks he may like a laptop, the things he is looking for are:-

1) large amount of ram (8gb or more)

2) large hard drive 1TB

3) quad core

4) touchscreen

Price for everything around £1000, has anybody got any recommendations or know any recommended places that builds laptops to order.

Would be grateful for any info.

Pop into your local computer retailer to get a feel of what is wanted, then just see what is available online that suits your price point. (You can also haggle in store if you find one you like)

Hope this helps

Do not buy less than an i5 machine, an i7 if you can. Double check the cpu rating though as some high end i5s are actually as fast as some low end i7s.

A quick check on amazon.co.uk reveals Lenovo (not a bad brand - one major UK engineering consultancy - the one that built the olympic stadium - issues Lenovo laptops to its favoured employees) laptops with 15 inch screens can be had for about 500 quid and up, i7 cpu, 8 gigs of RAM, 1 TB of hard disk. That's your price point. Reckon on another 100 to 200 quid for MS Office or get Office 365 for a tenner a month. If you're haggling you might get a deal on the software rather than the hardware.

Laptops with larger screens cost more. 17 inch screens are nice if you don't plan on lugging the portable laptop around much but a PITA if you have to. Better to spend the money on a laptop with a smaller monitor for portability, then spend the extra dosh on a regular larger LCD monitor for the house.

Oh and if you do go the laptop plus home non-portable screen route, factor in a proper keyboard and mouse as well, the micro USB dongle wireless ones are nicest. Again, you might get a deal on the screen and / or keyboard and mouse rather than the laptop.
