well that was disappointing !....with nad's recent amplifier and cdp 5 star reviews one would have expected the bd to be on a similar level..Is it just 'overpriced' or is it really that bad ?...Was really hoping it would be something special.

Well at £850 there's some stiff competition and apart from the quick disc loading times, the performance was frankly disappointing. We've seen better.

Seems pretty obvious that Sony and Panasonic will absolutely rule the roost when it comes to VFM Blu-ray because they've got the deepest pockets for R and D. Other companies like NAD simply buy technology from the big boys (or OEM makers), badge them and put them out at whatever price they can afford too, once the fact that it's a bought in player has been allowed for.

Unless it's a player from one of those two I'm not convinced there's any point in even looking at other brands, certainly not for the massmarket.

Not to worry the Oppo BDP83 is nearly here and already has some stunning user reviews!

You know i ,..i used my 'ancient' nad t550 this weekend and watched pearl harbour' in 2.1 sound via stereo nadc355bee and picture , get this, through 's' video connection (top spec monster brand) and both the picture and sound are really very good. The picture was not even upscalled just plain old 576i...I also used the same set up last night for the latest james bond quantum of solace dvd and was impressed at just how clear and full the sound is in 2.1, the picture too came up very well..Also the cd playback is very good...Nad were capable of good dvd 6/7 years ago, shame its way off the pace today..i agree it appears to be panasonic or sony and they are at affordable prices too..Just my 2 cents worth......cheers.

Well, I saw the NAD dem at bristol and thought dark knight looked absolutely stomping.

Probably worth auditioning especially for owners of NAD receivers.

Well i was about to ask what hifi if they could slot in the dark knight as this movie appears to be the 'benchmark' that all bdp are compared with.

We use Dark Knight in our armoury - NAD just wasn't up to the standards of the class leaders in its price point in terms of detail, sharpness or edge definition (decent enough with contrast, though). It's a solid player with a lot going for it, but - as noted - competition is fierce, and its relative deficiences (sonic as well as visual) become clear in an A/B comparison with rivals such as the Denon DVD-2500BT (which you can buy for significantly less).

Not always the case. Arcam made some stunning DVD players and there pockets are no where near a deep as some of the electronic giants.

It's always worth looking at other brands IMO.
