7.1.4 is great, and I would advise anyone thinking of going for in ceiling or otherwise wired in speakers to go the whole hog from the get-go, rather than end up with SIX speakers in the ceiling like I did.

Still. 13 channels are available now. As I've never been accused of UNDER-kill...

Placed the order for Denon AVR-X6400H! Should be delivered on Thursday. First step done then!

Congratulations on your purchase. Would be interested to know, if the main reason for the Denon was having all amplification in one box. You and sir benedict have been the resident torch bearers for marantz for a long time now. Would be interesting how you find the Denon coming from the marantz. Please keep us posted :)

Congrats BB.

Thanks! I've set it this afternoon, took a couple of hours. Working this weekend, so haven't had a chance to demo properly. Initial impressions are very positive! I normally listen on volume 40 on the Marantz, it corresponds to volume 55 on the Denon. Watching a programme on Amazon Fire TV (Into the Badlands), and the sound is amazing! Can't believe it's smaller than the Marantz in size! That means better ventlation...

Will continue testing over the Easter weekend.

So you don’t feel the sound is compromised by using an 11 Channel one box amp after all...

Interested to know how you feel it improves on your Marantz/power amp setup?

There is a compromise. Volume is now 55 instead of 40.

My previous was a Marantz / stereo amp (SR7009 + PM6005) setup, not power amp. But it's a compromise that can be overcome easily.

Still testing, need to check headroom.

Wow! Nice. 55 to 40 is quite a difference, so it’s quite powerful then? Because that’s one thing I was wondering about with the Denon, was how powerful it was.

Oh, I assumed you meant -55 and -40. My Pioneer amp is rarely above -35 volume, Denon must be very different.

My Pioneer ranges from -30db to -22db. Roughly the same with the Yamaha 3060.

It certainly is powerful. Very lively sound and clear dialogues. Need to test some scenes with explosions to see how it copes with that.

Like the marantz. I felt marantz was a 50:50 for both music and HT. How would you rate the Denon.

Been super busy at work, so haven't had a chance to test further. No issues on normal TV watching so far. Star Wars blu ray has arrived, will be watching it on Thursday.

i get the impression that you are not overly impressed - perhaps even a step down on your setup before given the need to increase the volume to achieve similar results as before?

I haven't been able to test it to the hilt, that's all. Initial impressions are very positive. But I have been working over Easter weekend, then was away in Cheshire last weekend, then again working next weekend, then wife working the weekend after (so childcare duties).

Wife on night shifts this week until Wednesday, and I'm working till late on Wednesday and Friday. Next week, I'm working till late on 2 days and going to Newcastle to interview candidates one day (traveling the day before).

Not concerned about the volume knob set higher as there's no distortion.

You sound almost too busy to switch on a TV let alone thoroughly test a new AV receiver in a home cinema setup! *shok*

I thought I'll get around £500 after selling the Marantz SR7009 and PM6005, but actually got £800 on eBay (ended up getting more for the PM6005 than I paid for 3 years ago!)!

The Denon is very good with both movies and music. Very happy. Perhaps sounds more open as compared to the Marantz. I'm having a bit of trouble taming the subwoofer, so need to set that up again.

Are you using the DeRemote app on your iPad as you can change settings on the fly whilst watching a film without going into settings all of the time?

Not seen that app before, just downloaded it $4.99 and looks really good. Will give it a try later.
