hello all, i pop in from time to time and have a nose about... i have posted this question a few times over the last few years and to date (or since the last time i posted the question) the answer was always no.

so, my question is, is there a blu ray player on the market that is as good if not better than the amazing denon 2500bt?

Thanks

I'm pretty confident you won't get an answer to this question, no matter how many times you ask...

I too own a 2500BT, and I think it's a great player, especially for what I paid second hand. However, I'm in no position to compare it with, say, the current WHF high-end favourite (also a Denon), or the latest high-end Marantz and Oppo BDPs, since I don't own any of these machines.

Certainly these all trounce the 2500BT when it comes to features. Let's face it, the 2500BT is a pain to update and offers no internet functions whatsoever. In this sense, even newer budget BDPs have a better all-round spec. None of this is an issue for me, but others make good use of streaming functions and automatic firmware updates. Who am I to quarrel with them about the usefulness of these options?

There are also some forum members that claim they cannot detect any difference in terms of performance between a PS3, budget Sony BDP, and the 2500BT. Moreover, as far as I understand, WHF don't have the space to keep older equipment, so couldn't perform a head-to-head test between the older Denon and current high-end faves.

I justify ownership of mine on the basis that I paid £150 and, in my view, it outperforms any other player in this price range by quite a margin in terms of sound and picture quality (even if others argue to the contrary). Unless you want to spend the best part of a grand on a replacement, be happy that what you've got performs to a very high standard.

I think the short version of all this is: if you're happy with the Denon, enjoy what it can do, and spend less time worrying about how it compares with newer models.

Agree with strapped for cash mostly. As mentioned, I didn't find any performance difference between blu ray players at different price brackets for 1080p/24 pictures. But there is a significant difference in DVD upscaling between players.

Im assuming you currently own a Denon 2500BT. If you're happy with it, stick to it. If you're not happy due to any reason (slow / faulty player etc.) then look at Denon's own DBP 2012UD which has won WHF's award for best £300+ blu ray player. i dont own a 2500bt. i tested it against a bd80(??) back in the day when the denon was retailing at 800 odd notes. there was a marked difference with pitctre and sound quality on all levels (motion, edge definition, colour depth, SOUND) and it totally blew me away. the trouble was that it was a nightmare when it came to playing certain disks without freezing or not loading at all etc and trying to update the firmware...i reluctantly gave the denon back and kept the panasonic.... i have had a sony since (s270??) and am now on a 310 panny. None to my eyes or ears have come close to the denon..so it loks like i am still waiting for something that performs to the same level. the DVD performance was also stunning.

if you got a denon for 150 notes, it's no surprise you are happy with it! stunning.

Yep, and I've had no issues with discs freezing or not playing, and I own a lot of films on Blu-ray. I think these problems are a thing of the past. However, I do worry that Denon will stop providing firmware updates for the 2500BT with it being an older model.

Perhaps you should have kept yours, though I understand your frustration. A quick google search reveals that owners had all kinds of problems during the months after launch.

I have had my 2500 for a while now and have not had any issues, it is on the last released firmware and does give stunning pictures and sound.

It is a great match for the Pioneer SC-LX85 i have now. It can be a little slow loading some discs but the positives outway the negatives.
