My CD72 is dying.....

Hi everyone.....

my Arcam CD72 that I've had since 2001 is dying.... That leaves me with a Cyrus 5 amp, Project Debut Phono and some recently acquired (and extremely pleasing) KEF Q700. The issue is what to replace the Arcam with.... I have around £1000, but things are complicated by the fact I use my iPhone 5 for music quite a bit now (Deezer account) so I'm thinking perhaps CD transport and DAC such as the Musical Fidelity M1.

Would appreciate any thoughts, thanks!

Get the CD72 serviced, buy a DAC, then spend the several hundred left on music! Or beer! Or wine! NICE!!!

+1 for servicing the CD72, at least find out if it can be revived.

+2 for finding out if the CD72 can be saved.

If it can, use the spare money to buy a NAS and rip all your CDs in lossless format to the NAS then investigate a streaming option - Linn if only using in one room (maybe), or Sonos if want to go multi-room. Both will support your Deezer account (AFAIK) and you can then have your Deezer music on your Hi Fi or iPhone...

What is wrong with the CD72, 12 years old is not very old, my Marantz 63SE is 20 years old and still going. Find out how much to repair and then repair or buy a used cdp, some Arcams go for low prices on an auction site. I would not spend a lot of money on a new cdp.

I'd vote for having the player repaired if it's economically viable. The usual problem with CD players is in the 'oily bits' – the mechanical stuff: the Arcam uses a Sony KSS-213C mechanism, IIRC, and replacement units are cheap as chips, as a quick ebay search will reveal.

You can probably find a service manual online, and swapping a transport mech should only be a matter of undoing a few screws and unlplugging the odd ribbon connector. It's probably something you can DIY, but f you need a professional service engineer to do it, costs may start to escalate.

I see. Some things are quite easy to fix, like tray sticking or replacing the lazer which is available for £10 on an auction site. So repairing should not be a big issue, if it is you can always buy another 1 there are several on there now.

Hi Chris, if you have basic electrical/ mechanical skills you should find this page on repair Arcam CD73 useful, as the two models share the same laser mechanism. :beer: At the bottom of the page you'll find a link to the service manual which includes circuit diagrams and set up info. Hi again everyone, and many thanks for the comments.... I love the CD player, so will certainly look at the repair options.

The idea of a DAC for the phone also appeals, I am quite taken with reviews of the Musical Fidelity unit mentioned, was wondering if anyone has one, or any alternative suggestions?

The player is skipping on playback, seemingly at random. Many goes with one of those lens cleaner discs has not helped...

If you're game, open the case and try some lubrication on the rails. Also incredibly gently clean the laser with cotton wool.

If that doesn't work, replace the machanism as suggested.
