Multi-room setup options

I've just moved into a tiny new apartment and need some creative ideas about how to wire it up for audio.

I have no TV and don't watch movies, but I still like the idea of a number of compact wall-mounted white speakers dotted around the place with a tiny amp tucked-away in a cupboard, running from a network server.

The place is tiny:

Living room = 3 x 3m

Kitchen (opens onto living room) = 1.5 x 2.4m

Bedroom = 4 x 4.5m

Bathroom = 1.5 x 2.5m

Currently I have a pair of floor standing Tannoys in the living room, with a DAB amp on top of one, and an ipod plugged in. Also have a Squeezebox Boom in my bedroom, running directly from a netbook over wireless (works fine). A temporary arrangement ...

All my music is FLAC on my 'server' (i.e. netbook).

I listen mostly to Radio 4 (i.e. talk!) in the shower and classical music / jazz stored as FLAC on my 'server' (i.e. netbook).

I'd love to end up with some form of audio in each room (including bathroom!)

I'm not minted, and frankly anything that is an upgrade to my crappy laptop speakers right now would be great. I have used Behringer MS16s before, they are £40 and provide a sound that suits my needs. However I'm looking for a setup that gives a more 'intimate' sound, i.e. sounds decent / immersive at low volumes in small rooms.

My ideal starting place would be to get 2 sets of Boston Acoustic Soundware XS, one for each room (bedroom / living room), plus some in-ceiling speakers for the bathroom and kitchen. I would then have some kind of volume / switch remote for each set and power the whole lot from an amp in a single box. I can't do the above because:

- it's ridiculously over-spec'd for such a small place

- possibly space for subwoofer in bedroom, definitely not in living room

- I don't quite have the time / money to set it all up (1 week / £1k?)

I do have a little more time than I do money right now, so I'm thinking about grabbing some cheap, used goods on Ebay.

I'd love to hear people's thoughts.

All I really want is music in my bedroom and radio in the shower, but I want to do it reasonably properly. Happy with non-audiophile gear, don't need massive volume, but won't put up with distortion or excessive tinniness.

Of course, this is a bit moon-on-the-stick.

Does anyone have ideas on setting up multi-room on a budget?
