Usually the back ports but try both - at lot depends on speaker position and toeing in (or not) - use some old socks if you need more bungs - works just as good.

There's a port underneath the bass cone on the front.

Are you being sarcastic or serious, I can't tell. Unless you have small kids or pets, I'd take the covers off - these puppies look and sound better without the grills!

Try useing the bungs in the front and a sock in each of the rear ports, this should calm things down.
They are about 16 inches from walls. I already plugged with socks on the rear, with no exceptional effects.
The thing ifs that the bass is not really tight and clear. It§sf kind of messy... and with too much reverb...

The RS6's have way more bass than most speakers in their price range. So it may be that you are simply use to the underwhelming bass of typical speakers.
I have also been tweaking the bass output on my RS6's. I found that changing my interconnect between CD and AMP resulted in a big improvement. The speakers are definately capable of tight clean, yet still powerful bass with no boominess or reverb.
It may be your room acoustics. Can you move them to a differenct wall? Also, play with toe-in versus no toe-in.
If your just don't like lots of bass, these speaker will never make you happy. Plus finding speakers with less bass is super easy. The other direction is much harder.
