The RS6 package will be fine. The 5009 will be capable of more, but that can be saved for a future upgrade...

He could look at any of the Monitor Audio GX, KEF R, B&W CM, or either of the PMC i or Twenty ranges. For higher quality speaker packages, the 5509 processor with a power amp would be required to exploit their potential (although this would be an option for those speaker packages already mentioned too).

The speakers will be driven to thier potential by the AV. He can upgrade to a better package later on and be stunned all over again! Something like the RX6 would be sensational, or if he has the budget and room space the CM9.

Are you sure that the RX6 speakers are so superior to the RS6 it would be worth replacing one with the other?

Whether they are worth paying double the price for over the RS6 is the real issue. But in terms of sounding better, that they certainly are. They are much smoother in the treble and more laid back, certainly a good upgrade, they also pair well with the Onkyo. Most people find the RS6 a little too bright so it could be an option if you like the Monitor Audio sound.

It also won the WHF awards for best speakeer package in that range.

I am sure they are good speakers and I would expect them to be better than the old model ( also WHF award winner). I just find it extremely hard to believe if you already have a working set of RS6s you would find it worthwhile to spend £2000 ish for RX6s. If you rich, buy something a lot more expensive that sounds considerably better, if you are not, keep the excellent RS6s and have a nice holiday.

Me any my bf chose the Onkyo 5009 to drive our new Monitor Audio Apex system and there is does a great job! I'm soooo loving music on it too!!! :) He wanted big floorstanders (like the RS6) but the Apex were better in our room. I cant imagine this amp not doing wonders for those bigger speakers!

It depends on what you are after, some view it as an upgrade and some dont see a valid reason. For me a smootehr delivery of the treble and better control of the mid would make it worth it. Thats If i was keen on the RX range. Alternatively He could, of course, go for the GS range ;) keeping it in the MA family.
