I prefer Reference for a number of reasons, but obviously, they're my reasons, and unique to me - those reasons might be different to someone elses, as might the brand preference.

Which I would recommend you buy would partly depend on your long term plan - sticking with the Z11 I'd say the Platinums (although these will grow with your system too), but if you're updating your electronics too and aiming for something a little more 'no holds barred', then the Reference series comes into play :)

If you had a whole evening of films to watch  which one would you choose?

Type away

This is a once in a life time project for me and I want my money to go in the right places. I don’t want the ‘what ifs’ to creep in at this price point.

Hi MA

In which case then i highly recommend that you should still also consider ATC active monitors :) The reproduction from ATC active monitors will blow your socks off! Simple really ;)

Alternatively the Platinum Series with the DSP-Z11

All the best

I warned you about my tweaking.

I will definitely replace the Z11. One concern (whether or not this is justified) is the centre speaker on each range and whether or not they have the potential to be overpowered by the other speakers. What do you think on either range? I know every speaker is as important as the others to an extent but the centre speaker since it is going to be for purely films is always the element I take a particular interest in - 60% of film soundtrack and all that. I am really looking for crystal clear dialogue but a centre that can ultimately hold its own amongst all the raucous around it, especially if the 207/2 has decided to take walls down during star wars or the PL300 decides a total reconfiguration of the living is warranted during Saving Private Ryan (I want the centre to at least throw the tv through the window  ) ha ha

I really love realism and detail. I like the idea of a speaker remaining as dedicated to the natural sound of the soundtrack without adding too much of its own character in a detrimental way. I know every speaker has its own unique sound which isn't necessarily a problem for me but I do prefer as much transparency as possible in the original material. I have read that the Platinums are good speakers for this. But ultimately I want a system that will really put you in the heart of film even during subtler moments with true scale and power when called for during films such as Saving Private Ryan (one of my favourites) and really makes the most of the film. But we do watch an eclectic mix of films especially animations and action films and anything from Twilight (the wife!) to Star Wars and Toy Story. If I ever do listen to music it is usually very eclectic as well.

The 204/2c and the PLC350 are both very capable centre speakers, and are designed to deal with anything that's thrown at them. You'll not experience any of your concerns with them.

:) Keeping it simple then. Platinum or KEF?

I get the feeling that you want somebody knowledgeable to tell you what to do. The problem is, that anyone who is worth listening to, won't do this. The three dealers that have replied all know their stuff, and are all encouraging you to go and listen.

If you are asking me what I would do if I was in your position, then it would be as follows:

Anthem D2V processor + Bryston amps (bi or tri amping..especially centre)/Arcam P777 if on a tighter budget.

Kef Ref 205/2 (Front L&R)
Kef Ref 204/2c (centre)
Kef Ref 201/2 (rear...especially if was heading towards 7.1 as would add more 201/2)
Kef Ref 209 (sub)....only need one, or you could have a visit from the bomb squad!

There has been a lot of talk about the sound. What about the picture...TV or projector or both? Which Blu-Ray player and in what form does your music take?

Also allow enough for installation, cabling, speaker stands where appropriate, acoustic treatment if necessary, and rack.
