Momentary Loss of Sound

I have two issues which were not present until my recent purchase of Denon AVR 2300 (and Q Acoustics 3000 series surround speakers)

1. Mostly on one Sky HD channel (NatGeo Wild HD) I will lose sound for a fraction of a second. In a given half hour programme that might occur max 2/3 times or not at all.

2. On any Sky channel I get what is best described as though the speaker (person) has moved slightly away from the mic and his/her voice level reduces for a few seconds and then returns to 'normal'. Of course, that could actually be happening and is, therefore, not a fault but I have to say I never noticed this previously.

I have changed the HDMI ARC lead twice to no avail with the second change being to a new QED Reference thingy.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

Sound dropping out is likely a sync issue and would I suggest caused by the Sky Box as I have had this with Virgin before now - have you tried a complete power down of the skybox - i.e. unlug it for a minute then power back on??

Thanks - yep I have tried the Sky re-boot a couple of times.

Since you mention the HDMI ARC cable, are you taking sound from the Sky Box via your TV into the receiver over HDMI? If so, might be worth trying a direct connection from the Sky box to the receiver, then on to the TV.

Currently as you are advising. ARC from TV to Denon ARC and 2nd hdmi from Sky to Denon

Ah right, so it's not that then. Mind you, it's not unknown for both satellite and cable services to occasionally cause a receiver or even a display to 'unlock' from the signal for a moment. Happens all the time on our kitchen TV.

Thanks. Having never noticed it previously may, of course, be cos the previous sound was so poor! Just a tad anxious though in case it's a fault with the Denon.

IME it seems entirely unpredictable, and some pieces of equipment seem to be more susceptible to it than others: maybe it's due to the way they lock to and unlock from the signal, and how many milliseconds the muting lasts when signal is lost for a moment.

Similarly, it seems to happen at random on certain channels now and then, perhaps due to the compression being used to transmit them. A glitch occurs beyond the STB's error correction's abilities, signal drops for a moment, and the receiver or whatever takes a fraction of a second to get its act together again.

Just by way of follow-up, I connected an hdmi from sky box to the arc channel of tv i.e. by-passing the avr. I then tuned into natgeo wild HD (never did it on their SD channel) but, of course, I had to alter sound on sky box from Dolby to 'normal'. However, I was able to discern momentary muting but the duration was significantly less than earlier trials. Suppose that may be something to do with non dolby sound?

Any road up! Reckon it's a sky sync issue as already suggested so I'll sleep well tonight without a dram or two!
