Hi everyone, recently had a demo of the Marantz PM6004/CD6004 with the Monitor Audio BX5's and really liked the sound. Was just wondering if the SR7005/SR6006 hooked upto the Marantz CD6004 will sound similar to the Marantz PM6004, or perhaps not as good.

Thanks :)

Hi, having a problem posting for some reason. When starting a new thread and posting for the first time on it, the text is very small and when I then try to post, there is no text. However when replying to a thread, the text size and font is okay ?

Not so long ago i had the 6004 on home demo with my KEFR100's. I tried with various sources in 2 channel mode against my SR5006 and to my ears there was not alot in it IMO. I'm sure the step up in quality of the 7005 in particular will lessen the gap further.

Hi markjaspi, many thanks for your reply which has helped me a lot. Ideally I'm trying to look for a one box solution with regards to movies and music. Have read many times on the web that Marantz AVR receivers are very musical. Will have to have a demo of the new Marantz SR7007/SR6007 against the Marantz PM6004 with the Marantz CD6004 just to see if I can hear any difference.

:)

If for example, the PM6004 sounds MUCH better than the SR7007/SR6007 fro music, then I can look to purchase the SR6007 with the PM6004 and that should satisfy my musical and movie needs.

I've also had a listen to the Roksan Kandy Amp/CD Player with the Bowers & Wilkins CM8's whcih sounded absolutely amazing. However there is a huge 2.5k cost asscociated with that and at that price, it should sound amazing.

However one has to factor in the law of diminishing returns when it comes to hifi and whilst I thought the PM6004/CD6004 Combo sounded great with the Monitor Audio BX5's, is it worth paying 1500.00 more for the Roksan/B&W Speakers ?

I would say that if you get an SR7005 and bi-amp the speakers, the performance is at par (or even better) than the PM 6004.

IMO, Budget stereo amps like PM6004 are good for a dedicated Stereo set up but when compared to modern AVRs they do not have so much edge. IMO, the tilting point could be starting from a Marantz Pearl Lite integrated amplifier.

Bi-amping speakers with an AVR makes a big difference so make sure that your speakers have bi-amp capability.

Hi sound10,

Im after the same solution as you. I sold my CA 840a and bought the Marantz sr7005 just over a month ago after being told by a few ppl that Marantz AV's are decent with music. I have only recently bi-amped my 683's and it has made HUUUGE changes to the sound with both movies and music.

If I'm completely honest, I much prefer the sound of the Marantz over the Cambridge and wouldn't go back.

Just need to sell my CA650bd and get either the Marantz ud7006 or wait for the replacement in the upcoming months :-D

Hi, many thanks for both of your replies which have helped me tremendously with what I'm looking to achieve re with regards to a suitable avr & music solution.

I will definitely now make sure I demo the new Denon AVR-3313, Marantz SR7007/6007 and compare them to both the PM6004/CD6004 Combo & The Roksan Kandy Combo to see if I can live with the compromise. If any of the above AVR's sound as good as the Marantz PM6004, or even better, then I'll be happy.

From both of your posts, it seems that this is highly likely.

I did demo the Onkyo 818 briefly and to my ears, it did not sound as good as the Marantz PM6004.

If I do go down the AVR route and eg purchase say the Marantz SR6007, what would be the best way of getting the best of out of my cds ?

Would the best solution be to purchase a dedicated seperate cd player eg the Marantz CD6004 and connect it to the AVR via the anologue inputs, or can I just get away with using a blu ray player and have it connected via hdmi.

What I'm basically trying to ascertain is, which solution will sound better.

I am aware that some blu ray players eg Marantz also have an anologue out. Does it make any difference in terms of sound quality to connect a blu ray player via hdmi to an AVR, or by using the anologue outputs/inputs.

My final question, is that are any blu ray players as good as dedicated cd players for stereo performance ?

Apologies for loads of questions, but I'm a bit new to this.

Many Thanks :)

I bi-amp my Marantz SR5004 and other than a hint of treble brightness depending on the music played I am very happy, bypassing everything that is Audyssey as well makes a world of difference, pure direct mode for me everytime for music.

Hi cicobuff, thanks for your reply. It seems that all Marantz AVR owners are very happy when it comes to musical performance which is great to hear. Also, I really like the Marantz design with the porthole and feel that they represent excellent value when it comes to build quality and performance.

What I would also like to do, is to do a blind test between a high end Denon receiver and the Marantz in pure audio mode just to see if I can her any differences between them. However I'm pretty sure that I won't as they are both made by the same parent company.

:)
