I am about to buy a pair of B&W P5 Series 2 headphones as they are currently on sale reduced by £70.

From what I understand the headphones are easy to drive so I wont need a seperate headphone amplifier. I am planning on using the headphone out on my SA8005 cd player. I could also use the PM8005 amp but I thought it would make better sense using the cd player as signal wont need to travel between components so it should make a 0.00001% improvement to sound. Hey it's better then nothing right?

Does anyone have any experiences using the headphone out on the SA8005? Is the sound good?

I've used older Marantz CD players with headphones in the past to good effect.

They're ideal if you want to run in headphones :)
Leave them in a spare room for a couple a days with a cd on repeat and job done. For day to day listening their ok and they usually can handle much bigger load than 22 ohm.

One thing I would stress is to audition headphones even more so than speakers. As not just sound but comfort comes into play. They can be most wonderful headphones but if they don't fit well over extended periods of time, they'll be no good to you. P5 according to reviews have a tight fit so if you have a big head I'd look elsewhere. I'd also look into getting a longer lead straight away.

I think the headphone amp/out on SA8005 is pretty good. I use it to drive my Sennheiser headphones - Momentum and HD600.

It sounds pretty good to my ears.

Check the specs of the b&w headphones to make sure the marantz will have enough krag to drive them to your preferred listening level.

I bet there is no problen but just to be safe.

Id also consider sennheiserhd650
Very close to this but slightly more bright my headphones beyerdynamic dt880(go for then250 ohm one)

Manual says Headphone output: 30 mW / 32Ω, which is very little power. Probably a smallish opamp providing feature for monitoring sound without an amp. For serious listening consider dedicated headphone amp. Fiio, Audioengine, Schiit, Aune etc.

Thats low power yes scrap the 250 ohm version go for the 32 ohm instead.
Yes agree go for dedicated head amp.
Id recommend superlux
It has 3 headphone inputs (3 seperate amps) and is massively powerful. Ive compared it to my benchmark and cant hear any difference.

It can run off battery and power cable and only costs £85 and has great built quality.

You can start your diesel engine in winter with that thing.

Thats no lie. I may be wrong but i think it can also power speakers as it has 15w.

Highly recommended if you looking for a good bargin.
I may get one as its portable also.

This has me worried. I dont listen to music to loud and the headphones are 22 ohm but I dont know if thats good or bad.

The specs of headphones are:

Impedance: 22 Ohms

Sensitivity: 108dB/V at 1 kHz

Max. imput power: 50 mW

Will this be ok with the 30 mW/32 Ohms of the in built headphone amp for average listening levels?

Should be more than OK specifically with the B&W P5 Series 2. They are very efficient and don't need much. Most headphones require more guts than the little JRC opamp has to give. It looks like a nicely designed circuit inside, definitely not an afterthought.

Just a heads up if you get different harder to drive cans.
