Hi everyone

Thinking about upgrading my old speakers for a while now. At the moment i'm still using a pair of Monitor Audio RS2 Silver. They sound pretty decent but I'm sure there are better options.

I'm in the possibility to buy Dali Oberon 5's at a very reasonable price.
Heard these once and was impressed but now I'm wondering if my 2012 Marantz PM6004 can handle these?
Also have the Marantz CD6004, a Sony vinyl player and a Sonos connect to play music from my library in high quality and stream Spotify.

For now I just want to upgrade the speakers, not the receiver or the whole system.

Would this be a (big) improvement or not at all?

Thanks!

Hi Sakke,

I do not know size of room, where you listen. But your Monitor Audio rs2 were pretty good their time. They are serious 1000 eur/pair bookshelfs. Your pairing with basic Marantz combo amp/cd has never showed their potential. It is a bit missmatch combination. Monitor Audio in general need amp with gusto, power, lively character like Rega, Naim or Roksan. (Let's say 1000 eur for amp and more).
On the other hand combination of Dali Oberon 5 with your Marantz combo will be very good, well balanced. To avoid some mortal money expenditure, I recommend to try Dali Oberon speakers with your Marantz cd/amp combination. Dali Oberon 5 is worth each euro they cost. They are not so picky about connected electronic like Monitor Audio. BR

Amp should handle them OK, as to whether a big improvement only you can say by auditioning in own home.
Nobody here can tell you that.

You have good speakers, the Dali may, or may not be better. The only way to tell is to listen to them.

As for the amp, it's within the suggested power required for both speakers, so fine on paper. Again the only way to know is to listen.

Thanks everyone for answering.
I'm going to a well known local shop tomorrow and have a listen. Probably have some other options as well.
Auditioning at home would be great but then I have to buy the speakers first I'm afraid...

Don't a arcam a5 should be a better amp than a pm 6004

Don't what? Its the speakers the OP is thinking of updating, not the amp.

As for your assertion "arcam a5 should be a better amp than a pm 6004", having not heard the Arcam I cannot comment, but would suggest if the A5 isn't a better amp something has gone horribly wrong, it's thirteen years newer and two and a half times the price.

It's not according to the link a recommend combination

(not that they don't recommend it but it's not something with as good a sound as you would expect or for your money)

Either a soft sounding amp or different speakers

A pair of speakers you have to listen to before you buy a pair

Hey, the Dali Oberon 5s would definitely be a nice upgrade! Your Marantz PM6004 should handle them fine—they're pretty efficient. You'll likely notice improved detail and soundstage compared to the RS2s. Go for it if the price is right!
