Hi All,

I am new to this forum and I am willing to set up an entry level budget HiFi stereo at my place. I am a music addict and I predominantly listen to the neo-metal. After doing my bit of research, I am thinking of investing on Marantz PM 4001 and Monitor BR5. I would like to have your opinion on the same. My room size is around 300 Sqft. Also, I am planning to buy the Marantz CD player along with same

Also, does anyone have an idea about how Yamaha RDX E700 is? Its not for me, but curious to know if anyone has a review on the same

I really wouldn't recommend buying the PM 4001 for two reasons: I just went on to richer sounds and they are saying that it is now a clearance product, which usually means that the PM 4001 is going to be fased out for a newer model, b) for me, pairing a £170 amp with £450 speakers is a bit odd? The PM4001 has a max power output of 30w, and the power handling range for the BR5s is 30-120, so you are entering right at the bottom of the range!

I assume you have a budget of around £800? If so, I would get the NAD C352CT Amp. http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1535, the NAD C542 CD Player http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1533, and the Acoustic Energy Aegis Neo 3 Floorstanders http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/3222 all of these got 5/5 from What Hi-Fi in various tests etc. Total: £830 (you might find it cheaper), don't forget about good speaker cable/interconnects also. That system would be a sturdy start in the world of quality Hi-Fi.

Thank You for your response. How does NAD go with Monitor? Is Aegis better than Monitor for the kind of music that I listen to?

Your inputs will be appreciated

Hi. Marantz PM4001 is an excellent budget amp and so is your MA BR5. I heard this combo at a dealer and was very, very impressed, 'what a great budget combo, i told myself'. PM4001 was driving the BR5 with ease, and the sound quality was excellent too. But, I thought BR5's bass was a tad less, but excellent with treble and vocals. Like the previous poster said, maybe its going to be phased out, i have no idea about it. Having said that, for a budget amp, you can also consider the excellent NAD 320 BEE or NAD 325BEE for MA BR5, another very good budget combo. I heard NAD 325BEE with Mission M33i, very good sound, credit must be given to NAD 325BEE, they seem like they can drive even better speakers IMO. So, you have two excellent choices Marantz or NAD. Speakers BR5 is worth investing IMO. Regarding your other question, i have no idea. Which country are you in ?

Well, I'm assuming that with the type of music you listen to, you want some good bass. Now, most floorstanders will give you a really plodding base, and that is exactly what the AE Neo 3s have been designed not to do. I have heard these, and they have a good lively bass step. The NAD amp will easily drive the AEs and they look lovely! The NAD C352CT has a very powerful bass, and the AEs will lap this up perfectly. The lowest power rating for the AEs is 25 watts, and with 80 watts, the NAD will easily drive the speakers.

For me, the NAD and AE would be a wise choice that should last for years!
