Penbat, You could just create a folder called music or something and move the entire contents inside of that because it could be a lot easier to random play the lot that way (the random play for the whole drive is a bit of an oddity). That is, you then select the 'music folder' and press play not any particular file inside of it. The first song in the first folder will play usually and then after you turn on the random function it'll select files from anything under the music folder. You can just skip to the next track if you get fed up of hearing the same song that starts all the time.

Ahaa - you are so right. What a mess tho, im sure quite a few people will get the same problem i did and Marantz customer services just threw their hands up. If i press Play on an Artist folder i get random plays just for that artist. It was partly my fault tho - i tended to press Enter when i should have just pressed Play but I think that was because i was confused as i wasnt getting anywhere not realising that i had to create a top level folder to make it work properly for the whole USB. So i could have got the Artist folder to work properly at least with Random anyway under my previous set up but i didnt realise. I will let Marantz customer services know and they will have to eat humble pie. They have shot themselves in the foot about this. They really should say in their instruction manual that a single top level folder must be set up if Random play is required for a whole USB. Marantz customer service told me that the chip set for USB only supported Random within the current folder. They strongly suggested that Random functionality was better with Music Server which was wrong, saying that USB was just a secondary bolt on and the 510 and 610s were primarily network devices. Also on USB it is sort of correct that Random only operates on the current folder but that has to be qualified as it also operates on any sub folders as well which i didnt realise.

The requirement of a top level folder isnt obvious. It isnt needed for the Denon RCD-M39DAB Micro for example for Random to work fine but it does have a "Folder mode" and a "All mode" so maybe Marantz should have had the same. Having a top level folder is obviously the way to circumvent the lack of an "All mode" on the Marantz.

I never had any problems with Random on Music Server but actually, a top level folder called "mp3s" was in place anyway so that explains why.

I even gave them a stinker Amazon review !

Why not just return it and buy something that does what you need?

Everything is cool now and im happy, but its seriously embarrassing that I had to work out the solution to the problem the hard way and was very lucky to have the assistance of SiUK. There should have been info about how to set up Random in the instruction manual. Also the info i got from Marantz customer services was seriously inadequate and misleading. I approached them at the start and they could have saved me all this. I didnt automatically accept Marantz customer services initial response. I went to the trouble of sending them 4 supplementary questions in the vain hope of further clarification from them. Ironically, I now understand Random on the 510 better than they do.

SiUK - on another issue, do you ever get "File Format Error" flash up for about a second after one mp3 finishes and before the next mp3 starts ? I thought it may be because i have a few non mp3 files included such as jpg artwork but im not sure. I only get it on USB not Music Server.

Yes. I posted about it in another thread. If you play a folder with tracks 1 to 10 in say, and you have artwork in there as well, it will attempt to play the artwork (doh) first if you have named your artwork numerically like 00 - artwork.jpg. Otherwise the format error will occur after the music has played. I never notice it actually as the display is usually turned off..well unless I'm skipping tracks I don't want to hear in random mode then it happens quite often.

My flac rips (unlike the wav and mp3s) have two images in each folder. Both images are the same just different names. One has the name of the album and is a 100% compression jpg (least compressed) and the other is called folder.jpg and is 80% compressed (more compression) and so they follow after the music tracks alphanumerically (eg. 01 - track 1.flac, 02 - track 2.flac ....11 - track 11.flac, artist - album.jpg, Folder.jpg).

Stupid bug that Marantz haven't fixed yet (needs reporting but I haven't got around to it) even with the two firmware upgrades that have already been released for the 610. Assuming it can be fixed with firmware of course. On the whole I don't really notice it I have to say. I swear blind it doesn't always do it. Must be under certain condtions that I haven't put my mind to working out yet. I know the skiping tracks will do it, and selecting a file manually in a folder and if the jpg follows the file the Marantz will try and play it and produce the brief error.

@magnus78

Depends on the CD I have found. Generally about 17 to 24 for 'soft listening' and 25 to 29 for normal listening but others need to be around 30/34 and some - classical especially - I have to increase to 40+ for comfortable listening as they are very quiet otherwise. Vaughan Williams Willow-Wood (Naxos) is a case in point. Has to be around 41 for it to sound loud enough to enjoy. On the other end there's Eric Clapton, Me and Mr Johnston which only needs to be at around 22 to 23 and it is still loud.

Also, with my other speaker cables (Audioquest Crystal now removed) hooked up I only needed the volume set at around 17 to 20 for most cds and even quiet stuff (like the album mentioned above) 33 was enough. Maybe has something to do with resistance, I'm not technical in that area so don't know. I know that there is a lot of copper in the Crystals though, more than is in the AudioQuest FLX-SLiP 14/4 I'm using now so perhaps there is a relationship there.

What are the benefits of playing FLAC files from a USB drive compared to streaming them from a NAS? I would have thought the USB method would be more cumbersome, as it can take quite a while to index a large number of FLAC files on the Marantz.

Hi Guys,

what's the max volume u play on your 610/510? Mine usually 20-25 for cd audio on 610.

Which speakers and how large a room?

I play mine up to 25 only for Blu-rays and some Humax recordings. (PVR and BDP HDMI connected to TV and then optical digital from TV to Marantz AUX 4).

On CD, FM and AirPlay I rarely need above 15 or 16.

(Speakers in my signature and they are 89dB for 1 watt @ 1 metre and 6 Ohms. Medium sized room.)

I have the 510 now, which was purchased to supplant my Onkyo CRN 755 and Dali Zensor1/Wharfedale SW150 sub combo not because of sound quality issues, but the absence of gapless playback which I cannot believe is shared with so many other amps. The 510 coupled with Zensor 3 and the dear old Wharfedale SW150 sounds very impressive and is a delight to be with.

I still cannot believe that it looks so awful and is so light in build, but it is doing a great job and the gapless side of things has made me finally put up my Squeezebox radio for sale in the knowledge that I can now listen to Dark Side of the Moon in its glorious, gapless wonder once more. Of course, since purchasing, it has reduced to 229 at Richersounds making it quite a steal and although a dead end for upgrading, I can't see me getting shot of it until it eventually melts.

I got the 510 a couple of weeks ago. Delighted with it. The sound is excellent and this includes for my vinyl, which is connected to it via a Cambridge Audio 551p. Compatibility with AirPlay is a particular highlight (This get round having to use the awful version of Spotify that appears on the remote. Instead I can just use the normal Spotify app), and has even endeared it to the wife. Also, while I agree that it’s not the best looking, it seems well built, so this isn’t a massive issue. So, as has been pointed out, the new price of £229 made this an easy purchase for me and I’m pleased that I did.

Hi, Is anybody here who use this Marantz with Dali Z1? I would like to compare volume level on this set. I'm using sometimes 30 points and I'm not sure if it's not too big loud for these speakers.. Could somebody share experience of using these speakers and what is the upper limit of volume level?

Thanks for any advice

Hi, what I've described is about flac files from NAS as source. 30 of 60 points of volume means half power of this Marantz. Is this safety level for these speakers?

Thanks in advice Piotr

It means no such thing. The setting on the volume control does not directly relate to ouput power in any way.

In this setup the limiting factor will be the power and control of the amplifier section. If you hear any sign of distress such as bass boom or harsh treble you are playing too loud. Use some common sense and you will be fine.

You like it loud then. My 603 is at around 12 - 15 for music server and Airplay and perhaps 18 for Blu-ray and PVR.

FM about the same as AirPlay (12 - 15).

This is with 89 dB @ 1 metre floorstanders and listened to at 2.5 metres distance across the width of a 4 metre x 6.5 metre room.

The biggest variation is the unknown, we have no idea of the nominal output level from the NAS and this will make the most difference.

HI, I have just got the marantz 610 as exchanged it from the cambrideg audio one as the audio one wouldnt play mix cd's, anyway was wondering if any of you could help and was wondering if any of you could help with my problem.
I have tried two hard drives in the rear usb port, both hard drives have got wav files on them (I think its wav files, ripped cds using windows)
Both of the hard drives start up but then the marantz units just says unsupported device, what am I doing wrong or are there only specific hard drives that work with the marantz, brand, size etc ?

Many thanks for any replies

Marantz clearly state that not all USB drives are compatible, maybe you are just unlucky.

My experience tends to suggest that thumb drives are more likely to be compatible, regular usb drives less so. Depending on the amount of material I would get either a thumb drive or preferably a NAS.
