Marantz CR502 DAB - Choice of Speakers

Hi all, this is my first post here. I'm planning on getting the Marantz CR502 DAB micro system, but am concerned by the warning about speaker matching to avoid a 'clinical' sound, in What Hi-Fi's review.

The review suggests Mercury F1 Customs as a good choice, but I was looking for something a step up from those - my first option was going to be the new Wharfedale Diamond 10.1, but similarly their review also warns about system matching...

As a Hi-Fi novice, can anyone give me some advice on this, or suggest suitable alternative speakers?

You've hit the nail bang on the head there with the choices

I dont think you could go wrong with either; both sound very good and IMO really suit small micro systems.

The other best thing you could do is purchase some quality speaker cable and not use the free stuff you'll receive. Chord Carnival Silverscreen would be the best bet IMO

You can buy the Marantz CR502 with its own speakers and surprisingly they are very good. It would be worth a listen as when you buy them together you get a good cost saving.

So speaks a dealer with stock of the matching speakers....

Of course, you should listen to them - as we did - but we feel you can do a lot better/get more from the system with the Tannoys upwards.

Indeed .....

We normally dont advise on the matching speakers but the Marantz units do actually work very well with the 502. It is normally the case that the add on speakers are poor quality units and badly built but not in this case. They certainly perform in the £150-£200 category and with the system are priced at less than £100.

Thanks for the input, I'd ruled out the Marantz speakers solely for future-proofing - I intend to incorporate this into a 5.1 system at some point, and so was erring towards the Diamonds and their fantastic looking range.

I see lots of people advise auditioning here... I just don't know anywhere handy
