How many here use some kind of mains filtering? what are the pros and cons, you think, of having any type of mains filtering?

I have various ones. The best ive ever bought was a balanced mains transformer. Theres no cons to one except the sheer size and it buzzes in use

As for actual mains conditioners ~ Most work well with sources and low powered equipment. many have found amplifiers (Especially power hungry ones) can sound worse as the conditioner is robbing it of power (tacimas are favourites for this problem)

Personally I use an Isotek Sigmas so it doesnt rob my amp of power

Pros ~

Assuming no loss of power then everything should sound better, more natural. Pictures on the tv will look more detailed and natural

All this said, if you have perfect mains to begin with then youll reap no benefits

I use a Russ Andrews The Silencer and a Tacima SC5723, both plug in mains conditioners. Both are plugged into the first socket in mains extensions. In different houses with different systems they have had varying effects, from none to virtually removing all background hiss.

I am currently using a Russ andrews platinum mains filter and I am not sure if it is robbing the power of the amp...like you mentioned. I am now currently playing the same track Peter Gabriel ''secret world'' over and over again, with and without the mains filter...it seems to my ears, with mains- the sound is cleaned up a bit but kind of lost the excitement, space and intensity of Peter's voice (if that makes sense). I have no idea which is best at the moment....

I should point out that my kit does not need much power, the amp is a mighty 1.2 watts, so no issues with the conditioners strangling anything.

Right- I have decided after careful listening over and over again. The mains filter is going. I prefer my system without it. It sounds more open and exciting, dare I say it...more musical. The mains filter is now connected to the mains of the TV...maybe it will be suited better there until somebody agrees to purchase it for their system and will benefit from it more than me on 'MY' system 🙂

Often happens, often reported anyway, so you're not the first. Keep the dynamics alive and ditch it. Anything that distracts from the simple pleasure of listening to a favourite piece of music should be consigned to the bad idea bin IMO.

Must get round to putting my BT MCU on the 'bay. Been hanging on to it but it makes no difference worth adding another link in the chain for, so it's going.

I think a lot depends on your mains supply, often a factor of where you live. My mains supply is subject to surges, so I installed an Isotek mini-sub about a year ago and experienced a tremendous improvement. It works for me!

i use a tacima for everything except my amp, i feel it cleans things up slighty. for the amp i bought a 2m russ andrews classic with a superclamp in the wattgate to protect the amp from spikes, i plug this straight into the wall with a double socket that also has the tacima plugged in. i previously had the amp running through the tacima and felt it robbed it of something but since i changed im not sure theres much of a difference, does anyone know if having it plugged in to the same plug as the tacima is changing anything as i am not sure if i have heard this theory before?

At the moment in the first instance i plug components using standard mains cables supplied directly into wall sockets or alternatively use Wilkinson stores mains extension blocks.

No loss in performance as components are allowed to breathe.

I don't think tacima should have got 5 stars for holding up current to a power hungry amps.I ended up using it only for cdp , tv etc. but not for my amp ...that was a mistake.I am disappointed of WHF review it didn't work for me.

Instead iv bought a power cable from SHB , should get it by the end of month.Let's hope this is gonna be an improvement.

Id have to disagree. For the money its VERY good. Finding a mains 'conditioner' that allows full current to power hungry amps tend to cost a LOT more money
