Hi,ive just completed my home cinema set up which i am very happy with, the ONLY! thing i havn't upgraded is the mains cables, not through scepticism but its just turned out to be the last thing i thought about,so i am looking for some advice on which would be the best for each component without it being overkill,my kit consists of 1.Sony KDL46X2000 LCD TV. 2.Sony BDPS1E Blu-ray player. 3.Sky HD Box.

Do a search and you'll find an extensive set of views on Mains cables. At the end of the day, find someone who'll let you audition some and see if it makes a difference to your eyes and ears.

It's best to remain sceptical because replacing mains leads make no difference. The ones that come with the equipment are fine and designed for it.

You could waste some cash and try and convince yourself otherwise if you wish, it's a free country.

I have found that giving your system a clean power supply with all the noise that is found on a mains ring circuit filtered out makes a huge difference to both the sound and picture quality on a AV set up.
I would recommend you start with trying

Tacima CS929
6 Way Mains Conditioner and Filter
(What Hi-Fi 5 Stars)

You can buy them on E Bay for around £25.

You might like to look at this site which expains the effects on Hi FI and gives the benefits of cleaning up the mains. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/nuukspot/decdun/powersupplies.html

You're a funny guy, lol. How did you come to this definitive conclusion?

I was thinking about getting one of those Tacima's , especially as I have a new 42" plasma. Does it have full surge protection ? Also do they guarantee up to a certain amount like the belkin one's do if your equipment gets damged.

I know about these things.

Look, it's got a see-through bit n'all so it must be good.

I must look in the manual for my amp tomorrow and see if it says anything about the need for mains conditioning. There may be a disclaimer along the lines of:

'Although we have carefully designed and manufactured this unit to be plugged into and operate from the 240 v mains electricity supply, alas we know nothing about it. Be careful, you could be in for a few nasty shocks and unwanted strange noises. Also be aware that your blacks may not be as inky as you'd expect them and you may have a few veils. That mains supply, tut tut.'

Is it expensive? If it's a reasonable price the placebo effect is going to be minimal at best.

£40 of the Realm's currency I believe, but it was on offer a while back so lots of gul... er, enthusiasts snapped them up.

Lol, will you sponsor us?

I'm the guy on the right - greying but not white yet and no moustache.

Edit: And stop reading this forum and do some work!

Bizarre though it may seem, prowling this forum is my job - or at least part of it.

Evenings and weekends, though, I'm arguing on my own time, just because I miss you lot so much when I'm away...

S'funny, I don't call sarcasm and locking threads immediately on being challenged as arguing.

Oh, and gisajob, I can do that (the forum reading bit).

Oh, OK, gpi, so if someone comes round your house and starts making personal attacks, you're cool with that? Get real

Let's get back to comment and debate, not name-calling, please.

Depends on whether you bring the chilli or not. Or pudding - if you bring tiramisu you can call me anything you like.

OK Clare and Andrew, sorry about those last remarks, (my bottom lip is trembling now
emotion-6.gif
) I almost deleted them as they are a bit below the belt. It's just that the mods I know do the job for free and don't come across like you two do some of the time, but I guess it's a thankless and difficult job.

The 'arguing on my own time' thing was a Monty Python reference, and it obviously whooshed.

As for the locking threads thing, we will continue to do that whenever a thread gets out of hand.

On past showing, not in a million years.

With hindsight, maybe you should have, but apology accepted.

I think you're confusing mods on site run as a hobby with those on a site like this run by a professional staff, and with the standards of propriety inherent in the print magazine to maintain.

Put simply, I won't have newcomers to this site put off by the kind of carping and insults found on some other forums out there, just as I won't have words appearing on this site which I wouldn't expect to see in the print magazine.

Whatever do you mean? I type all the right letters but not necessarily in the right order. I do remember the Monty Python sketch but you're right, I missed the subtle reference.
