Can any one advise me if it would be best to put a surge protector between my onkyo 905 and the main wall socket, would this degrade the sound ? worried if there is an electric surge the amp could be damaged.

I would suggest you to check it for yourself if you notice a difference or not.

I use this and have not noticed any difference in performance.

My understanding is that mains conditioning before an amp can have a strangling effect on the amp. That is different from surge protection which should, by its nature not affect the amp or any other electronics at all, unless there is a surge.

I once tested a 'surge protector' plug in (Simply plugs into the socket then the amp into that). It definitely killed dynamics (That said, it was a beast of an amp)

in all honesty all I use is one of these
