lost on jargon

Sorry for sounding stupid. Im new to all this jargon what is meant by the term DAC?

in what way would you use this, Why/when do you convert digital to analogue? Reason i m asking is that i am upgrading old system and want to look into all avenues, Been reading many threads of which have been very helpful if not confusing at times

WOW!!

Will read more at later date. Basically i dont have to worry too much about this as my hifi will sort it one way or another. ie cd player or amp . Not know which or what way looking at moment,
