Losing interest

What I’ve noticed over the years is that every now and then I lose interest in listening to my hifi setup.

I will still listen to music in the car and on tv, but find I’m really not bothered about the turntable, Cdplayer etc. And find myself just enjoying some peace and quiet.

Maybe it’s to do with the light nights, I dunno. But listening to the birds on an evening seems more enjoyable.

I appreciate where you're coming from. I too prefer listening in the dark. But as long as it still gives you pleasure it all that matters.

Just enjoy the weather. We had a nice barbecue today. It's been lovely. I've not done much listening in the last few days either but really looking forward to tomorrow. Will be working all day so hifi will be on all day.

We are very demanding as to the sound. The more we love music the more we need from our Hi Fi. It is a huge correlation between money spent on the system, expectations and worth of it. When you spent big money on the system you get more critical as to it and expect more. The drawbacks will be significant if you find them in your set up. Then you might slowly lose interest. I presume it is down to your Hi Fi. I think you might be not quite happy with it because being happy with Hi Fi is a really difficult thing that never comes across easy. Then alongside being more mature you start not to bother with all separates and focus on all in one solution that sound so good like a small radio you put on. Hi Fi is about ebb and flow. Again, try maybe to experiment a bit with the sound. Maybe sth new ? It is a hard job to fit room acoustically together with Hi Fi for a good sound. But once you manage, it sounds great. That's the hobby of it.

Second thing is - you might generally lose interest in listening to Hi Fi and music. You can be overloaded with it. That also can happen. Then you need a break from it.

My first love is still music on my HT system in DTS neural x mode. I understand it is difficult to convince folks to dump their 2 channel systems, but I bet my HT system could put forward a very convincing argument once someone listens to it.

I listen to my 2 channel rig early mornings or late evenings in preferably a dark room. But when iam bored, nothing beats watching music vids on YouTube on my HT system.

I only yesterday added the qacoustics concept centre speaker and tweaked audyssey settings with the audyssey multieq app. Now with audyssey only correcting below 250hz and leaving the rest as it is, has brought back the magic into music. Iam really happy with both my 2 channel and HT setup now. And I enjoy alternating between the two, too much of anything gets pretty boring pretty quickly. Waiting for the devialet to arrive in mid June, will have plenty to finger again. It is too hot these days in India where I live. So I don't regret being forced to stay indoors and enjoy my music :)

I understand where you are coming from.

I've listened to very little music these last few days as I've been binge watching all 4 seasons of The Bridge on BBC iPlayer. It was the same last year when I got NOW TV specifically to binge watch all of The Sopranos which I'd missed first time round.

During the day, drving around in my van at work, I very rarely listen to music. It's either Radio 4 or TMS for me. I find that if I listen to music all day the last thing I want to do at nightime is sit down listening to more. Also, having a 2 year grandson living at home with us has curtailed my listening habits somewhat.

You are not alone bigfish. I tend to go in and out of love with music and have to be in the right mood to really appreciate it. I've never been a background hifi listener, it has my undivided attention when I do listen to it. But listening sessions can be hours long and with the current decent weather there are other attractions that compete for my attention: golf and motorcycling, or just enjoying the peace and quiet, or birdsong in the evenings. It's just a phase for me as I'm sure my interest will return at some stage in the future. Sometimes a break or rest is good.

Same with ripping CDs, I have to be in the mood.

Music has taken back seat to BBC (drama, comedy, documentary, history) and audiobooks for many years now.

I have no interest in any British/American ‘popular’/rock music from the 60s, 70s, 80s etc. because it’s all been so overplayed (at least since i’ve been alive) that I am sick of most of it!

I have a few hundred music CDs (about 350 ish) but I have ripped less than a quarter of them. I have even more BBC CDs (still buying them too) and they are all ripped and do get played.

It is well worth playing most such content on the hi-fi just as much as any music (especially the impeccably recorded BBC radio drama CDs) so the system gets used frequently (daily) and it stays.

When in the mood for music I tend to select foreign language content on Apple Music and let it play random selections. (It means I don’t have to suffer the banality and boredom of ‘western’ popular music lyrics over and over and over again for the umpteenth time.)

All you need are some new power leads to get your appreciation for music back.

There could be something about it. Any change to a system that gets you to sit down and listen attentively could do it. Particularly if you don't listen like that on a regular basis you're more likely to hear things you never noticed before and attribute this to the new "component."

On another note. Ideal weather to binge on music today.

Nope. It's everything to do with the fact that over the last few weeks, most of the UK has actually been having great weather, the kind of weather that much of the world takes for granted when it's not winter. But it's gold-dust to us here in the UK. If you don't live in the UK, or haven't ever lived in the UK, you've no hope of ever thinking the weather might be a factor. But it is. In England and Wales, half the population is Vitamin D deficient through lack of sunshine. In Scotland, all of them are.

I've tried various times to listen to my hifi in the evening after work, then thought, 'do you know what, fk this, for all I know it could rain from tomorrow to the end of August: I'm going out to catch some rays.' And that's exactly what I've done, even if it's just sitting in the garden, reading.

See you all when the shite weather returns. So Thursday probably.

Haha, it's cloudy here already. Hope it doesn't carry on till August though. Two days of rain per week will do for me.

It is TV that takes more of a back seat in the warmer months for me. I make an exception for Wimbledon and the occasional Grand Prix F1 race.

Having just bought a new streamer I’m listening more than usual, and this time last year I’d got the new speakers. So maybe May is my music month!

I do give this forum a break from time to time.

I do most of my listening in the winter as i like spending time in the garden or going out with my family.
My listening room is west facing and gets too much sun late in the day so the room is not ideal in the summer months.
I believe its good to have a break or limit my music listening.

Totally with you there. In summer I loose much interest in Hifi, or to be more specific, the technicalities and gear side of it. Too many distractions, from cycling to socialising during those warm evenings and now I've added photography.

Come Autumn I will get interested again.

I still listen to my system a lot but its usually background stuff whilst I do something else
