Evening Ray ...bit of a late response as I'm off on holiday soon and I've been running round sorting stuff out.
Before I bought Quad I had a good listen to naim, cyrus, roksan and the better cambridge stuff both in store and at home. I primarily made my choice on the sound of the amp and to be honest I found it much more difficult to tell between the cdps with my untrained ears. I found the cyrus and the cambridge very 'digital' sounding but the quad seemed to sound more balanced and the dac made sense as I use that input a lot.
I've spent the last week listening with my beresford as a pre in an attempt to catch the integrated pre on the 99 out but to be honest it doesn't make that much difference. I'd like to hear it with a really good passive but I'm happy with the sq for now and I've got a good upgrade path for the future. Theres an interesting stereophile review on the web that talks about a noisy volume pot but I think that refers to the cdp1 rather than the 2 - can't find fault here.
Downsides? Fiddly little buttons and no volume knob so you've got to use the remote, which takes a lots of getting used to. The phone rings and I still go straight to the cdp to turn it down!
If you're interested talk to Mark at audio emotion. Hes really helpful, gave me a good deal on price with a 5 yr warranty and I think they've got a 2 week no quibble return on at the mo.
Hope thats useful! Jake
