strangely often overlooked, but still firmly manufacturing in N. London.

They were swallowed up by a multinational, but the original owners bought the company back. One has left and now makes/sells those black magic cables that cost so much, possibly in the UK too.

Designed and manufactured in the UK these days is probably the purist form of 'made in the uk' you are going to get, unless you are carving a speaker stand from a solid piece of English oak.

I remember working for a lead-acid battery manufacturer back in the early 90's. Their car batteries carried the slogan 'the Great British Battery', yet the shiny red cases and lids were from Italy. Can't remember where the lead and sulpuric acid came from, but at least the electricity was home made *smile*
If you live in the southeast I wouldn't even count on that. The UK imports 2 gigawatts from France almost continuously.

One problem - customer service. I would investigate that, some of the UK soley/mainly manufactuered brands have not exactly got the best customer service - which is odd because you would think they would have the best.

One would hope customer service was never needed...

Anyway, I'm in the US so return to manufacturer is a consideration.

Still leaning towards Cyrus with Pro-Acs....
Crumbs, I'd be jumping at the US brands we can't get here, like Magnepan. I guess that overseas products seem to have a cachet.

Unless you're talking
Dan D'Agostino (sp) levels of moolah, American hi-fi is like American beer IMHO - brash, gaudy, overly effervescent (that means fizzy, guys), about as subtle as a B-52 attack, yet somehow totally devoid of taste or oomph...

And try finding a retailer where you can demo stuff. I would have to drive up to Dallas (500 miles) to find a decent boutique retailer.

Where I live they are still digging up coal. The coal trains run at night down to the power station along the coast. And every hill has a wind turbine on it! Next they will be building a barrage across the Severn, a short cut to Butlins Minehead *smile*

They've been talking about a Severn Barrage since the 40s. At one time, complete with an airport bigger than Heathrow and Gatwick combined.

Tidal turbines placed on the seabed are now coming along, so no need for a hydro-electric dam, and since the Government us intent on turning everywhere from Staines to Uxbridge into runways etc. there's never going to be an airport there either.

I thought all the pits in Wales were closed anyway...

As for Butlitz ....

Can I take it you are in South Wales too?

One of the biggest, if not the biggest open-cast 'pit' in Europe just down the valley from me......

Oh, and add British subwoofer manufacturers REL and BK Electronics to the list...Apologies, just seen luckylion100's post....

As Al alluded to, in South Wales there are some very large open cast coal mines. Thankfully, some of them work on a reclamation method of filling the void after they remove the coal, allowing the land to be reclaimed very quickly. And some, the one at Dowlais Top near Merthyr is a good example, utilises a spur of the Rhymney Valley railway line to transport the coal, avoiding the need for road transport.

And back to the subject of 'Made in the UK', there must be a generation of workers with a lfetime of manufacturing experience that is no longer being used. They are all either unemployed or working in other industries, as there is simply not enough manufuacturing left to utilise their skills. I miss year end stock takes and hassling production planners *sad*

To my alarm, many UK companies seemed to have moved production to china. How many true made in UK companies are left? I believe Rega, Linn, Tannoy are still UK. but what about others like Castle, arcam, Musical fidelity? Roksan? I just dont know anymore. Same thing has happened in North America & Europe. Globalization seems to have relegated much of the future to China. Sorry but I am not happy about this.

That's because people aren't willing to pay more for British manufactured goods. Labour is more expensive here, and manufacturers couldn't compete with the Chinese. Also, China has deliberately undervalued its currency.
