David Aston:
Even Linns emails look expensive!
Nice people Infidelity, as I recall. However, when I mentioned to Grahams Hifi's "God of Linn", that a Sondek service I had used Infidelity for, did not appear to have solved a problem, he was quite scathing about them. (In fact the problem related to the Audiolab amplification I was using at that time, so no blame was due to Infidelity's man.) I did get the Sondek from Grahams, but they are a bit tricky to get to for servicing.
I may appear a bit of a heel having a pop at Linn, but I do think the stuff is too expensive. I don't suppose any forum users think there may be other British hi end producers who could be similarly "named" and shamed.
God, how subtle can I get.
I think this is something which is down to two things - Linn have always been relatively at the high end; didn't the original LP12 retail for something like £200 when it first came out? Not such a big deal now, but in 1973, that would be well out of many pockets!
Plus, Linn appear to have taken the decision to position their product line at upper end of the midrange market to the plain high end buyer. I'm not sure this is something we could reasonably have a pop at them for. Some companies choose to place themselves in a certain marketplace and Linn have opted to go to the upper end of the scale. That might, in the current financial climate, prove to be a problem for them, but time will tell.
You could have a look at Sugden or Meridian, who fall into a similar bracket. A full on Meridian system will hit your pocket on a very grand scale, Sugden less so, but even they could still be an outlay of £10,000 depending on what you buy.
