JohnDuncan:Ha. That flattest of flat-earthers, Linn, are saying "it's time to change from CDs to DS" and are running events round the country. Meet you at one, Joel?

I just had an email from Linn about this. Nearest venue is Guildford some 45 miles away.

I doubt anyone here lives in Guildford.

Maybe WHF could invite us all to the Infidelity one along the road, make a feature of it

What does the Linn DS stuff actually do?

It seems you still need to get a DAC and a computer (to rip CDs/download files etc).

Is it a multi-room thingy like Sonos?

I think there are a few of them (from expensive to really expensive) but they're like squeezebox with amps built in (so a Solo Mini Streamer). The cheapest one is about a grand though, which is at least not totally out of everybody's reach. But they have digital ins as well, if I recall.

I think only the 'Sneaky' has an amp built in.

The other more expensive DS models need you to provide DAC, NAS, Computer and amp and a means of remote control.

Am I missing something? What is the point?

No to the DAC, I don't think, but yes to the rest (and a remote control, in the case of the Sneaky

). So it's a Squeezebox with Linn on it.

I think the Majik has a preamp as well, so you just need a power amp.

Still outrageously expensive though (except the Sneaky).

chebby:RS232 for a 'remote' (Sneaky). There's high tech!

(Handset not supplied of course)

Makes the Naim HDX look like good value.

Oh I dunno. My iPhone'll work it. And it looks quite sweet......

I looked at this range when I was considering options for a NAS based system. They are incredibly expensive for what they are. And if you ask me, Linn seem to encourage a kind of smoke-and-mirrors approach to marketing these products not making it clear exactly what it is or what its component parts are. Relying instead on the line that it'll beat any cd player you care to challenge it with. When I listened to a few of the mid-range products (and these were horrendously expensive) results were good. But frankly, you could get equally good results for half the cost from other boxes that don't have the name 'Linn' on it. I went for a DAC-Pre / SONOS / Power amp combination that in my opinion out performed the Linn offering that would have cost twice the price.

Oh agreed. It's an airport express and a Beresford in one box. Except not wireless

And Cambridge their 640h for us proles. Or just that media server that they were promising (still waiting to beta test that one, Cambridge CEO

)

And for Squeezebox to put out a 440mm wide squeezebox that looks like hifi (instead of a dog's breakfast) and is half the price of a transporter. And blah blah.

Even Linns emails look expensive!

Nice people Infidelity, as I recall. However, when I mentioned to Grahams Hifi's "God of Linn", that a Sondek service I had used Infidelity for, did not appear to have solved a problem, he was quite scathing about them. (In fact the problem related to the Audiolab amplification I was using at that time, so no blame was due to Infidelity's man.) I did get the Sondek from Grahams, but they are a bit tricky to get to for servicing.

I may appear a bit of a heel having a pop at Linn, but I do think the stuff is too expensive. I don't suppose any forum users think there may be other British hi end producers who could be similarly "named" and shamed.

God, how subtle can I get.

I think this is something which is down to two things - Linn have always been relatively at the high end; didn't the original LP12 retail for something like £200 when it first came out? Not such a big deal now, but in 1973, that would be well out of many pockets!

Plus, Linn appear to have taken the decision to position their product line at upper end of the midrange market to the plain high end buyer. I'm not sure this is something we could reasonably have a pop at them for. Some companies choose to place themselves in a certain marketplace and Linn have opted to go to the upper end of the scale. That might, in the current financial climate, prove to be a problem for them, but time will tell.

You could have a look at Sugden or Meridian, who fall into a similar bracket. A full on Meridian system will hit your pocket on a very grand scale, Sugden less so, but even they could still be an outlay of £10,000 depending on what you buy.
