Hey guys

The LG BD390 looks good to me. The thing I really like is the media player function (save me using the noisy XBox360). Has anyone got one of these and what do they think?

I already have a Pioneer BDP51FD. Anyone able to compare performance between these two?

I'll use it for Bluray and DVD (obviously) and for streaming music and video from my Buffalo Linkstation NAS.

Considering your requirements, the LG-BD390 sounds like an obvious choice.

I disagree - you'll be adding functionality, but it won't be a performance upgrade. I'd wait until the 2010 generation of players, many of which appear to offer iPlayer etc, plus faster loading, generational improvements in performance etc. (And I include LG in that).

So, the BD51FD has better picture and sound quality over the LG-BD390?

I've not done an A/B, but based on comparisons we've done with other players around that price-point over the past couple of years, i'm confident in saying they'd be close in performance, with the Pioneer likely to have the edge.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. Nice to be here. I had a look at the LG-BD390 last week and I feel that my Sony would be a better choice for you. I saw a better picture and heard a better sound.

Thx.

Im also interested in getting the LGBD390 because it seems to hit the mark for me, which is a good blu ray player and, importantly a good media streamer.

Im looking for something that will stream (mainly) home video and photos from a (powerline) networked buffalo NAS drive to my tv (42PFL9664) and give me a first rate GUI that both I and my family can use - the ability to have thumbnails of all content is really important (ideally ability to see small & large thumbnails too).

I dont know much about the "2010 generation of players" - but Im about to press the 'buy' button on a BD390 - so really curious to know some more about what's coming out / when / and whether its likley to better the BD390 for my needs?

I've read a few people complaining that the BD390 doesnt play all their media types - is this one of the main changes with the 'new wave' ?

Is the Dne player one of the new wave of 2010 products that was mentioned above?

Can't see anything remarkable about it, apart from the fact that its 50% more expensive than the BD390! What's good about it?

Could you expand? Ie why is it a pile of rubbish?!

Because quite simply in terms of picture quality (having owned at least half a dozen players ) there is very little to choose (in terms of picture or sound ) between any of them . The biggest problem by far I have encountered is disc compatibilty, if it wont play the disc its no damn good, and it always seems to be from my experience the likes of the Samsungs and LG. I have owned two Panasonics with NO problems whatsoever, two Sonys the same and a PS3- coincidence? I will never be convinced. And the nightmare I had with the LG only reinforced my opinion. I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole!!

Strange that it gets SUCH good reviews then from the experts. Are you playing unusual disc formats or something?

Why would I want to play 'unusual formats' and then single a particular player(s) for criticism?- No regular BD's. I have always been very suspicious of reviews, prefer to use my own eyes and ears!

I have nothing against LG as brand - I own an LG LCD screen - superb, but samsung I hate. several friends have also experienced problems with this brand and not just bluray.

I just plunged into LG BD390 (as the richer sounds store were all out of the sony 760).

The networking aspects of the LG were quick to setup-but really slow, and I couldnt get photos to display without crashing the player.

Performance with DVD is the disapointing aspect-as I hoped to replace my 8-year old toshiba SD220, but the LG is worse; picture noise, odd things with left-right pan motion.

Mind you, watched AVATAR blue ray last night. Oh My ! I still cant quite believe my esyes; just sublime (on my Panasonic 42G20).

Wrestelling with myself-should I bother to swap it for the sony760, in the hope of better dvd performance and perhaps even better blue ray pic/sound.

What do you reckon guys ? is benefit worth extra £60

It was last October so - from memory the following

Sunshine - near end credits - picture break up

Watchmen US directors cut (region free) picture froze at start of 'in movie experience' bonus content

Angels & Demons audio dropout and pic problems

Monsters inc - froze

during the week i had this i watched about 7 or 8 discs at random and experienced the above, which i have not had on any of the other players i have owned. even the assistant in a well know discount dealer admitted they had considerable returns with samsung and their demo 390 had a faulty drawer mechanism

but if your happy with yours - great, its just in my experience and observations on several forums these makes seem to have more problems than others notably samsung, and i dont believe its just coincidence. for example the recent Avatar release there seemed to be more negative feedback from owners of these makes - even after firmware upgrades.

I am aware of pioneer players requiring upgrades to play this disc - but afterwards - no problems

My sony played without an update so did my panasonic and ps3
