I have multiple sources supplying audio/visual to my Samsung LCD TV each using HDMI connections. The sources are, PS3, V+ STB, Nintendo Wii & the built in freeview tuner. I need a small discrete surround sound solution like the Dav-IS10 system.

If I connect the optical out on my LCD TV to the Optical in on the Dav-IS10 system, will the audio from what ever source i am using be sent to the Dav-IS10 via this link? If so, will the audio/video stay in sync? Finally, will there be a significant loss in audio quality?

Thank you for your opinions.

Usually the optical digital out from a TV is only fed from the internal Freeview tuner, but the best bet is to consult the manual and see what it says. With the DAV-IS10 I'd suggest using a digital switcher to feed the various source components' audio straight into the system, rather than going via the TV, even if it allows this.

Thanks for the advise.

I would like a neat compact system so I assume a switcher would be another small box that i would have to get my lazy @$$ off the sofa to change audio source with or would all the sources feed through at the same time (no switch, just a connection box).

If so are there any other uber small compact systems that will allow me to wire up directly to the amp/receiver?

I guess all of the all in one package recievers/speakers will have the same problem of not having enough sockets for input.

What would be a good dedicated slim 5.1 reciever and speaker combo? Say no more than £1000.

Hi Andrew,

Just to let you know in case you were interested....

I read the Samsung manual and it says that the optical out on the LCD TV will transmit all of the audio in sources but only in stereo.

So if i passed 5.1 in to the tv via HDMI only stereo would come out of the optical out.

I also looked a bit closer at the switching box idea you mentioned.

I dont fancy having to add another remote control to my collection or having to manually change the switch each time i want to swap source. Am I understanding the operation of one of these switches properly?

Assuming your V+ box is similar to my BT Vision, then I use the audio out from that to my dav-IS10. 3 HDMIs (dav-IS10, PS3 and BT) to the TV and Toslink between PS3 and dav-IS. You could switch between V+ and the Wii when in use. My internal freeview only gets used on the very rare occasion that I am recording 2 channels on the BT. That gets played through the TV's internal speakers (which are otherwise muted).

Freesat HD will present me with a minor headache, though.

However I am sure somebody recently posted a link to a multiple (HDMI, Composite and Optical) switch gear which I am sure required a remote.
