Hi,

Can someone tell me if I need large speakers for the surround channels for Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio? Also do speakers that go down to 25hz classify as large or small? Finally is a sub woofer needed if all other speakers go down to 20-25hz ? If yes would you recommend using one or two subwoofers?

Cheers Raf.

Hi Raf 1,

You dont really need to have large speakers for surrounds, ive always used dedicated surround speakers as opposed to using main speakers as such.

And no matter how low some speakers can go ive always preffered having a sub anyway as its also about the quality of the bass aswell?

And i use 2 subwoofers as it makes everything sound more even to me & more balanced, although having 1 sub is good enough & will still do a great job.

The only thing I'd be aware of is that just because the specs of a speaker state 25Hz (response and range are two different things), this may be measured at -6dB, which in many circumstances (many other frequencies at the same time) may be non existent as far as our hearing is concerned. Generally, a speaker that can reach 25Hz comfortably (not many at all!) would be classed as large, but as I said, this depends on other specs. Also, regardless of how big a speaker is, it's not designed to, or just not able to reach real sub frequencies in the way that a subwoofer can. So I'd say in 99% of systems, a subwoofer will improve the system overall.

One or two subs really depends on their cost. Two budget subs won't necessarily sound as good as one better one. Two subs would be an option for those who already have a good sub, but from a first time buyers point of view, get the best you can initially, as you can alway add another one later.

Regards

David
