What I want to know is, in Hacksaw Ridge, why didn't the Japs just sneak up in the dark and cut the scramble net? And how did the net survive all that shelling?

The Japs didn't know about the net, and, being on the side of the cliff, it avoided being shelled.

You'd have thunk they would have wondered how all those marines were getting up the cliff they certainly knew about. Oh well. Hollywood and all that, I suppose...
