I Have tried a couple of times to ask if anyone knows the difference between the two apart from the 500.2 costing £200 + more but nobody seems to want to reply.

Just take a look at their website and you will see that the 3005 are the style package with WHF product prize and the satellites are small by comparison to the 5005 series full size speakers .Just depends on your requirements.

should i then asume that the 500s are in fact better because of the extra cost

As I said-down to your own requirements-in the words of many on this site,give them both a listen and judge for yourself.Do you want large speakers or small-You havent said what you are linking to,and how much room you have.Minimal information in,minimal out.
