Thought it might be an interesting little project for a complete novice. If it goes well I'll use the template with higher spec components.

Watch out Music First - here I come!

A passive pre amp kit. I'm a bit obsessed with passive pre amplifiers at the mo so I thought I'd give this a go.

Yep. I use a rothwell one at the moment and really like it. I'd love a posh Music first one but they cost a fortune!

Ha yes of course! I'm afraid it won't be a PJ Pro type thread - its simply a matter of assembling a kit although I can't solder for toffee, so the pictures could be good for laugh.

Tbh I really want to use it as a dry run for a high passive with silver wiring, quality attenuators and switches ala the music first.... got to be possible to produce something 60% as good for 20% of the cost?

I've seen a stevens and billington tvc for sale - if only I had the guts to spend £600 on a component I'd probably ruin!

This one is supposed to be OK and they claim very close to the sound of the MF pre. Not heard it myself but tempted in trying it.

Chaps,

Having heard both in my system at home for over a week each, there's no way the Glasshouse comes within 60% of the Music First (Silver). Its the best I've heard this side of an ARC ref 3, and thats different not better..

Hey, Lord, that looks really interesting. I'm tempted myself when I have some spare cash. Let us know how it goes

The Music first reference was a bit tongue in cheek. I've not heard one but I'm quite sure theres a very good reason why there cost a small fortune!

If you like good stuff that doesn't make use of any compromise (like with so many well known brands) on build and music quality, then take a look at this site...

I stumbled on this site about 6 weeks ago and since then i have been trying to gather info about these products.

One dealer mentioned the "silk glowmaster" series, especially the GM 70 monoblocks blew his ASR emitter II away, and it's more bang for your cash to.

A UK dealer...

LM, when it comes to wiring and such like try this ebay store:

I have used them many times and can personally recommend their solid silver wiring.
Good luck with the build and let us know how you get on

Thanks for that - I was going to post asking if anyone had any good contacts for quality components. I think my plan at the moment is to build this with fairly basic wire etc and then go all out with really top notch stuff if it works and sound ok.

I quite fancy using a wooden enclosure for the posh one. Any acoustic/electrical reason why I shouldn't?
