Yesterday, I've set foot into a proper Hifi Retailers Premises (no offense to RS) the first time in about 6 years since the closure of all Movement Audio branches in and around bournemouth.

What a retailer I've picked!

Set into the grounds of a Golf Course and housed in converted barns, JA is selling only High End.

Beautiful stuff and I have to say I was in awe. To much to point out but a huge and stunning Master Sound Amplifier plus focal top speakers in red probably stood out.

The owner was there and asked me what I use. After telling him I appreciated his warm response that there was nothing wrong with my choice even if he didn't mean it :)

I had a service user with me and after he almost leant onto a Wilson Benesch TT I thought that may be a good time to leave. I'd love to go back and listen to some of the products but to be honest with no prospect of buying may give that a miss and just believe my system is 'near high end' ... . Ignorance is bliss :)

Now, all I have to do is win the lottery.

I have had a few dealings with them over the years. I bought my Bryston 28BSST2's from them many moons ago and they ended up buying my Devialet 800 from me a few months ago. Proper nice chaps with a no BS approach and zero pressure to buy. They stock a really wide range of obscure (read exotic and expensive) stuff which makes them my go to if I am feeling adventurous. Pop back in with your credit card. Go on... I dare you.

What did you change the Devialet for?

People laugh when I tell them, but just for you I traded it in for an ASR Emitter II Exclusive and an Esoteric DAC.

I actually quite liked the Devialet's sound a lot, but in the end their shonky customer service combined with an uncomfortable sense that my hifi was a computer and therefore may be obselete in 5 years, pushed me over the edge...

Not quite true about the Devialet being obsolete in that it would be about as obsolete as any other piece of equipment. So long as it continues to function, you're still getting what you paid for. In fact with the Dev. You can send it back to Devialet and they will upgrade it to the latest spec (Expert Pro) for an extra cost, obviously. So a Devialet is far less likely to become obsolete than almost any other Amp. We've discussed the customer service aspect before and sadly my experience differs very greatly from yours. Still, your new Amp looks exciting. Hope you're happy with your new set-up!

Only the passage of time will tell whether there is any obsolescence, but from what I have read there is already functionality in the latest firmware update that can only be utilised if you upgrade from the Expert to the Pro series. It is starting to feel like an Apple device to me.

The other doubt I had about the Dev in general was that it slammed the door firmly shut on anything other than "closed circuit" upgrading. I am very interested in the latest, thoroughbred FPGA DACs coming out of PS Audio and Chord Electronics. The ongoing development of MQA is also something which has pricked up my ears. With a Devialet you can forget all of that unless you are preared to accept D>A>D>A conversion, which I would most certainly not. I contacted Devialet about MQA and whether they would be looking at that. Not on their development roadmap they told me.

I am a tweaker and box swapper so I guess the Devialet model was never really going to suit my appproach to this hobby. Horses for courses, but they really do sound great in their own right. Just not for me for the reasons above.

As for the customer services issue, behave yourself sir! Just look at the internet and you will see that you are in the very, very lucky (and small) minority if you have experienced nothing but good service.

I often druel over Jordan's website and did have a conversation a few years ago about home demoeing the Mastersound, but as I doubted I would be able to afford it, decided against it.

I popped into HiFi Corner in Edinburgh earlier in the year and the guy there, even though he knew I wasn't in the market to buy, showed me round the whold shop, some beautiful gear there too.
