Has anybody got it yet?

Obviously a shouty record, just wondering if the Vinyl is worth the investment over the CD in terms of dynamics etc?

I would prefer the vinyl though!

Spotify first me-thinks, then make a call on getting the vinyl.

Im desperate to try a modern recording on my turntable, but want it to be a really good album. I have high hopes for the Johnny Marr album.

Listening to it all morning on Spotify - I love it, he hasnt got a bad voice and fantastic guitars (but what else would you expect from Marr)

Not sure which format. I've been listening to it for a few weeks (a friend furnished me with a pre-release CD-R) and although I'm a lifelong Smiths/ Marr fan, like you no doubt, I was really underwhelmed by it. I was also surprised by how poor it sounded in terms of sound quality. Unless the vinyl bucks the general trend of much newly released vinyl being poor pressings and/or a simple digital transfer, I'd personally not hold out much hope for it.

It pains me to say it of one of my musical heroes but it's a pretty poor record, for me. Great playing, lame vocals, mediocre songs. As noted by someone elsewhere (Pitchfork online review), this would have sounded great in 1994. I agree, it now just sounds uninspiring and hollow. Brittle and brash too, on my system anyway. Even in the car I find myself wincing at the compression and tinny sound when I push the volume upwards. Shame.

I've waited for it to grow on me. Buf it's just not happening. Maybe it's a case of "has the world changed or have I changed" to quote SPM, but it doesn't do much for me.

Charlie,

Thats what I didnt want to hear!

O god why cant these mastering engineers sort their crap out?

Why cant records sound like they did in the 80s as an example I picked up a copy of Latin Quarter - Modern Times.... what an absolutely fantastic sounding/produced LP

Hi Steve,

I don't know what happened to my reply but it went something like this:

I hope it was the fault of my CD-R, and that the vinyl does improve things.

Have you made any progress with Elvis Costello?

Its the record companies who think loud sells more, maybe it does in the mp3 market but its no good for hifi. Just listening to it on spotify don't think I will be buying it but its OK. I stopped buying LPs in the 80s due to poor quality, scatches etc. The early 70s ones were much better, thicker, less scratches.

Modern Times sounds a bit lightweight.

I have read somewhere that DR (Dynamic Range) rating for this new album is only 6.

If this is true then this album is yet another casuality of the Loudness Wars (when will this madness end) |(

At DR = 6 I think I will settle for listening on Spotify Premium - certainly wouldn't waste any more money on what is clearly a poorly mastered release.

It really is a tragic situation with all this poorly mastered music that's had the crap kicked out of the dynamics!

I am at a loss with now - surely the artists aren't happy about this stupid needless situation!

Yes we expect it (but we shouldn't) with chart music for the iPod generation but this is beyond a joke!

You read right, it is 6, presume that is for cd.

Top Rock/Pop cd is Steve Earle's Copperhead Road at 19, his Jerusalem is only 6.

Steven Wilson: The Raven That Refused to Sing

This appears to be somewhat better if that is your cup of tea, talking of which must have one.

Steve,

Im with you about the album. Not a great but Im loving the New Order feel to many of the tracks.

Having read what I presume to be your conversation on Amazon, Ive gone ahead and ordered the vinyl. Lets just hope that Stacy hasnt let us down, with her comments.

Steve,

Whats your verdict on the vinyl?

Have to say I think it sounds a little on the dull side. Still much better than the Spotify compressed version, better seperation and much better sounding guitars etc.

Still loving the album, but the new Stereophonics outing has trumped it for me. Another vinyl purchase!, This "new" hobby is costing me a packet!!
