I just realised that there is no way (free or paid) to remove DRM from iTunes tracks that are old 128kbps "protected AAC" format and which are not available in the DRM-free 256kbps "purchased AAC" itunes Plus format.

I am willing to pay - either to go Plus format or just remove the DRM and stay at 128kbps but I can't! So in my library I have these bloody several tracks that won't play on Squeezebox Touch and screw up playlist palyback while thousands of others (including ones from iTunes) will play no problem!!! How irritating is that! [N][8o|]

On its introduction, the Plus format upgrades were coming up initially so I could upgrade more and more tracks but in the last 6-9 months I do not remember any coming up, so these remaining old 128kpbs tracks are jsut stuck in this limbo, not upgradable.

iTunes DRM free? It is not!

Pathetic!

What happens if you right click on a track and select... "create AAC version"?

Does the newly created copy have DRM?

(I have no remaining DRM examples to try this out on first. Sorry.)

I did some quick digging and the only thing suggested was the burn/re-rip approach. which means: 1) lots of time, 2) quality loss - however little there is to loose at 128kbps, 3) feeling of being undersold by apple and record labels.

I assumed if it was as simple as 'creating an AAC version' it would have been recommeded on apple support forums? Have not tired though.

If none of that works then you could use an MP3 recorder. There are lots of free ones out there. They basically record whatever is coming out of you speakers in to MP3 format.

As mentioned before buring to a CD and then importing again usually does the trick

... and in the burn/re-rip approach, will I have to manually enter the track/artist/album etc names? I did have to do this with my CDR compilations...

AlmaataKZ:What is Requem? Never heard. A software?
Requiem is a piece of software for dealing with issues with Apple's FairPlay AAC DRM.
Have a look for it on Google (Requiem AAC) or even review FairPlay on Wikipedia (Sorry - I'm on iPad compatible text-only, so can't remember how to post a link).
EDIT: FairPlay Wikipedia remembered!
