Is there a difference between a Rega P1 and Rega RP1 apart from the price??

We all know that spec doesn't tell you everything.

The RP1 uses a new platter Rather than the old wood one, it uses a moulded resin one, which allows Rega to make sure the whole platter is balanced (much like balancing a car wheel), and also allows them to mould it in a way that most of the weight is around the circumference of the platter, giving better inertia, and more accuraate speed.

Also, the arm has been changed as far as setting the bias is concerned. I can't explain it here, but it's so simple a monkey could do it.

Sounds like some quite significant improvements then? Mind you, the arm setting on the old model was also very easy to set. I wonder if there would be a noticeable difference in the sound of the new model?

Andrew Everard:So apart from the arm, the platter, the bearing and the motor...

As it says on the website;

The all new completely British-made RP1 features:

  • Brand new Rega RB101 tonearm.

    Precision main bearing and sub-platter assembly.
    High quailty low vibration motor.
    All new Phenolic resin flywheel effect platter for excellent speed stability.
    Ortofon OM5e moving magnet cartridge.
    Rega sound quality at an unrivalled price.

But of course they snuck that in since I first posted. I mean, how could I have missed that? I couldn't, could I?

I'll get me coat............
