Is the Nintendo Switch 2 any good? What are your thoughts please

My thoughts....

I don't buy consoles when they first come out. If I simply wait a while, bugs get ironed out and prices tend to drop.

Nothing about the Switch 2 is making me want to rush out and get it to replace my Switch. But at the same time, I mainly use my Switch for Mario Kart and old Nintendo games. Main gaming is done via PS4/5.

Just asked my niece did she want one for Xmas and Birthday but she said she was happy with her Switch OLED. She said that she will wait for the reviews to come out and think about it later on in the year.

The Switch 2 is fairly solid device, there is also plethora of excellent alternatives that are far more capable than Nintendo's offerings.

There's the Lenovo Legion handheld, based on the SteamOS. There's ASUS Z1 chipset hand helds, if the rumours are true, their new models will have Strix Halo CPU. Not sure if the ASUS is Steam or have their own bespoke software.
Consider also, MSI the Claw (the title reminds me of an old black and white 50s B sci~fi movie!).
This has the Intel chipsets. Not as good as those hand helds based on AMD, also less energy efficient.

If it were I making the choice, I would go for the SteamOS based hand held.
It has a vibrant eco system. I already have a Steam Deck account that allows me to play the latest titles on my PC.
Since it is based on the AMD processor, I should be able to play those games on SteamOS hand held.

Anyway something to think about. The above-mentioned are graphically superior and offer better flexibility than the Switch 2 and costs about the same or more depending on the specs.

There is momentum towards handheld gaming devices, I feel if this doesn't wear off, it will move people away from consoles. Maybe your old XBOX or Playstation will be consigned to the attic, who knows?

It's really great you have the portability to take it with you wherever you go, on a train, on a plane, on a bus, I don't like green eggs and spam, Sam 🙃

There are three competing formats, Nintendo OS, Windows OS and SteamOS.
There's also Cloud but it's a bit laggy, not the best gaming experience.
Nvidia has an app for SteamOS, which is great for games that takes advantages of Nvidia's frame rate technologies like DLSS.
If you want PC functionality go with Windows OS. If you want seamless gaming, go with Switch for kiddy's or Steam OS for grown ups.

I also heard from the rumour mill, Steam Valve Deck has a SteamOS in the workings to replace Windows 🪟 on PCs. Oh that would be awesome for gamers.

Apparently there is an Xbox handheld coming out at the end of this year. Being built by ASUS based on the ROG Ally, but souped up. Apparently it will also support Epic and Steam libraries. I guess likely pricey, though.

I just bought a Nintendo Switch 2 on 3 easy payments from Argos, don’t know if it’s for me or my niece. I will give my niece first option. Just cancelled that order, so I will wait until Xmas first for a better deal and to see if my niece wants it, she currently really likes her OLED Switch and I was thinking that would suit me better too.

Games on Switch2 are upwards of £90 when it use to be about £40

Valve SteamOS has Oled on their top model, the SteamOS 2 is rumoured to be releasing soon with AMD's top chipset. Probably best to wait.

The Switch2 is much lighter and has a smaller profile than the other handhelds which is great advantage especially young children. It has the latest Nvidia chipset which gives it some parity with the better handheld alternatives.

What I like about having the Steam account, so many games are free.
Old games are heavily discounted and new games are anywhere between £20 to £40.

Also the new Xbox PC handhelds based on the Asus Rog Ally with MS customisation, I hear, has both MS XBOX Free Pass and Steam catalogue and rumoured to play Playstation games. That's flexibility 🙂

So you buy the games on the Steam account only? How much does that cost? Thanks And can you return it if you don’t like it?

SteamOS games you download it on to your handheld which comes with memory SSD 512GB, 1TB or 2TB variations, unlike Switch which comes in cartridge format. Memory is standard so you can always swap it out for much larger memory, which you can purchase elsewhere for much cheaper.

I'm not sure what their refund policies are but they do offer playable demos, so if you like it you buy, if you don't you discard.

Go and open an account it's free, you don't need a hand held, you can use your PC or Mac. This will give you a feel of it and if you like, then the choice is yours. Worth exploring before you decide to commit 🙂

Remember that old Orange advert

The future is Bright, the future is Orange SteamOS 🙂

Ps. The games you purchase are permanently online, so if you change your handheld for something better or if your memory corrupts, you can always download. You actually own the game!

If your Switch cartridge develops a fault and it's outside the warranty, that's it you've lost it, same with any physical formats, i.e. CD's, cartridges etc., like XBOX and PlayStation.

I decided I wouldn’t use it much and would have to go into my savings to pay for it, which I decided against.

I also decided to buy a new 4K Blu-ray player to replace my refurbished Panasonic UB400 the Panasonic 820.
Don't you just love Buyers Remorse! 😀

The Panasonic DP-UB820 is an excellent choice, really pleased with mine. I did fleetingly see it selling for £327, gone onto to site and I get 404.

Most places are selling for £349. Do Curry's do price match?
