Is it better to go for the Pioneer LX-71 rather than the
Panasonic BD55? Considering my screen is a Pionner 4280 and that will
actually be downscaling the image it receives from the blu-ray player.will the increase in PQ be lost in the downscale process or is this purely academic?

If this is the case I might use my limited budget and go for a PS3 for blu-ray and an entry-level Arcam for CDs instead.

Well, I guess to some extent, in that you're clearly not going to get the full resolution of a blu-ray disk. Nevertheless, there's a lot more than number of pixels to take into consideration - eg colour, motion and so on. So a better blu-ray player will still give better results, even on a 720 (or 768, in this case) display. I'm looking at the LX71 myself (if I can get hold of one) and I have a Pioneer 428 (ie same as yours, more or less).
