Hey peeps,

Ive just bought this b_idax305.jpg for the motor. I need a new ipod to feed the head unit. I guess what i'm asking is whether there is a new, bigger HDD classic due out. I'd hate to buy the current 120gb model, for a new model to come out a couple of months later.

Thanks to all.

There's a 160Gb Classic model which was released about a week ago, can't go wrong there!

I bought the 160GB ipod classic. Thanks, Blunny.

I bought it direct from the Apple store, as they were offering free engraving on the back. A gimmick, but a nice touch.

I had all my cds imported at 128kbps for my last ipod, an ageing 3rd Generation 20gb model. I decided to re-import them all at 320kbps, for a better quality sound for the Alpine head unit. This was on Friday. Two days, about a hundred cups of coffee and four hours sleep later, i've got through 150 ish discs. Only another 800 or so to go! Ever had that feeling that you shouldn't have started something?

If anyone is in the market for a new head unit, I whole-heartedly recommend the Alpine. As with all Alpine gear, it has a look and feel of real quality. The 2.2" screen is bright and shows album artwork. Also, It bypasses the ipod's DAC, using it's own 32 bit Burr Brown chip, which sounds very, very good. With an additional module, you can also take your calls through the head unit, via bluetooth.

Seeing as you are re-importing all of your CD's I'd recommend (if you have the HD space on your PC) that you import them as lossless. That way you know you will never have to import 950 CD's again, if in the future you want a better bitrate.

I have an external HDD with all my music in lossless, and use DBpoweramp (free version) to batch convert all the music into compressed format for my Ipod. You've already found that as tech gets better and cheaper, you can afford to have better quality music on your ipod. Who knows what capacity ipods will be available in in 5 years time.

Very nice headunit by the way.

You're absolutely right, Binman, Lossless would be the best way to go, but i've only got 80gb left on my external hard drive, so I had to compromise.
