...me spending the extra on the CA stream magic 6 if I am going to run it through a half decent DAC like the Audiolab MDAC/CDQ etc. Or will the NP30 do?

I'd turn the question on its head. Is it worth spending money on another DAC when there is already a decent DAC in the SM6?

To be fair I was thinking more along the lines of the CDQ than the MDAC though think it makes mroe sense that way. Not sure how much better the SM^ would be that the cambridge audio NP30
