as part of my summer setup i'm listening instead of a tube amp yamaha as-500 amp with vienna acoustic haydn grand speakers. they're 4 ohm speakers and yamaha has 4/8 ohm switch at the back...i set it by the book at 4 ohm position...but, reading some reviews about yamaha some of them says to ignore this if you have 4 ohm speakers, and use 8 ohm position instead, because it sounds better? i would like to try this but i'm afraid, i'm not sure is is safe for the speakers? what would be the benefits of setting switch at 8 ohm? what's pro and con in this situation?

This amplifier allows the simultaneous connection of two 8 ohm speaker pairs, so providing the Viennas are the only connected speakers you can safely use the 8 ohm setting. The output power is limited on the 4 ohm setting. In any case the speakers are not at risk.

Hi tacty

how does it sound? Is the yamaha enough to drive the viennas?

its sound is beyond my expectations, people are describing yamaha as cold and harsh but it's far from it with viennas...sound is big and bold and weighty...i think budget speakers and the usual suspects like monitor audio bronze 2 dont do it justice to yamaha...i'm using it most of the time with small el84 amp, but despite very good sound lack of power is evident, yamaha is pushing viennas into unknown teritorry :) i dont have a chance to push it past 11 o clock, at 12 o clock it's a madness...but they sing like never before, it is clear that some reviewers were right in suggesting pairing viennas with at least 100 W amps...

P.S before vienna haydn i was using exactly monitor audio bronze 2 and for a while have them both...i was doing some ab listening tests with some friends and as you can imagine it was like day and night...i was pretty shocked at how much viennas are better and didnt expect so much of a difference...it teach me a valuable lesson: dont skimp on speakers...

thanks, but what about amp, is it an extra effort on the amp side which could damage the amp?

i have tried it today and first impressions are: less power but slightly relaxed presentation...i dont know what to expect, but it takes time to decide is there any differencies and some more switching between 4 and 8 ohm position...

I think the Yamaha has to be set to low switch as mentioned in the booklet. By the wy waht is the source you are using and waht other component you are using.

As you can see from my signature I also have the Yammy but connect to Kef the dont sound that good though some sounds brilliant but other are not so good. It could be my source as I only use the computer I I dont have a Dac. But after listening our view I think I would be better to change my Speakers to better one . Though thare are not many brands in here. And Demoing Is a problem. How much did the viennas cost at ur place.

i'm using netbook + dacmagic 100 + van den hul cables...mine viennas cost me at some heavy discount about 600 euros, but mind you it's not the regular price, i think they were around 1200 for pair...

Good discount you got there.

Did you demo the speakers first, before buying?

no, i knew it will be marvelous :rockout: :)

but, lets go back to 4/8 ohm dilemma...no danger for either amp or speakers though??
