Is it possible to get used to a HD image

Hi all, one to muse over. Having had my setup for a couple of months now I feel I am getting used to the HD PQ and am becoming less "wowed" by it. Is this normal?

Also on a another note in your opinions is 720p a better resolution than 1080i as I cant decide which to set my V+ box to output as, got the feeling I am going snowblind.

Like anything else, when you're exposed to it day in day out you start to take it for granted. I spend my whole day surrounded by sets showing HD images (I work in the industry) and its very rare that HD now wows me. It tends to be more a case of being disgusted by the quality of some SD broadcasts when I see them these days.

matthewpiano, thankyou, I am feeling the exact same way to a lot of my SD broadcasts on Virgin. Any views on the 720p resolution. Native for my set is 1080p, but the only options the V+ (and I believe Sky as well) gives me is 1080i or 720p. As there are technically more "real" lines on 720p as opposed to the interlacing of 540 extra lines to give 1080i does this mean the image quality is also greater. As i have said I think I have been staring at the TV now and "think" the 720p loks better? but still not sure.

Hi True Blue

For what it's worth, I have my V+ box set to 720p. Not for any scientific reason, just my personal preference, that's all. And like you and Matthewpiano, yes, I do think you get used to HD after a while so it seems more normal.

Thanks Andy, just a shame there isnt more HD content at the mo

Tell me about it! I have to put up with the rest of the team coming into the office and saying: "Oh, did you see such and such in HD on Sky last night? Wasn't it great!" Grr, no I didn't! At least we've got Sky One back for the new series of 24, even if it is in SD.

Totally - you soon accept HD as the norm and everything else just looks a bit rough around the edges.

I think I'd go for 720p every time over 1080i. Personal preference, of course - not corprorate policy.

matthewpiano, agreed, the audio side of HD is the true technical advance

I think the wow factor does fade with time. As has already been suggested the best way to improve your HD picture is to watch a couple of hours of standard def first.

On the 720p/1080i issue, I had a very interesting experience at the weekend although not using a V box.. My Panny 37PX80 has a maximum resolutionof 720 but can accept a 1080i or p signal and downscale it to fit. I usually output from my Sky HD box at 1080i. On Saturday I was watching the Australian Open on Eurosport HD and was experiencing a slight blurring on the fast ball movement. I decided to reset the Sky output to 720p to see if this helped. There was an immediate difference, but not the way I expected. The picture quality was infereior at 720. There was a noticable flicker over the whole picture and the overall image was less sharp. Ressetting to 1080i solved this.

It would appear that the PX80 is a much better downscaler than the HD box.

Blimey that is strange giving that the native resolution of your TV is 720P, it should not have to do any scaling.

Also yet another channel in HD that Virgin dont have grrrr. Try watching it in SD!!
