I'm going through the manual of the STR-DA5400 amp and I saw that the recommended setup of a TV to the receiver is by an HDMI cable for video signals and by and optical cable to the receiver's "TV Optical IN" connection, for audio signals.

I thought that HDMI transfers both sound and video signals, so the optical cable is redundant; am i wrong?

It's 'cos the HDMI signal goes IN TO the TV for watching movies, and the optical comes FROM the TV for listening to regular TV through your receiver.

The HDMI inputs on your TV are just that. Inputs. They don't output anything.

The HDMI cable transfers both sound and video from your receiver to your TV, but not the other way. If you want sound from your TV on your surround system you need to do this by the optical (or analogue) output from your TV to your receiver.
