Is having two amps a good idea or a bad idea?

I was thinking about adding a £2000 Yamaha amp to my system but I'm still keeping my Pioneer, what do you think? I would rotate between the two.

You must have money to burn with questions like that or you are hopelessly addicted to shopping.
A bit of both.

I might just ask my dad can we swap amps back again thinking about it. I miss 180 watts to my current 170 watts.

It doesn't work that way for amps. The difference between 170 watts, 180 watts and even 250 watts is insignificant. 1700 watts is twice as powerful as 170 watts. So 180 watts is not even 1% more powerful than 170 watts.

Simply turn your AV receiver louder. :)

You are insane. This from the man who two weeks ago was thinking of selling his excellent LG 980W OLED television and his Blu-ray player because he needed the money (not said at the time to be for the purpose of quite redundant electronics). If so, how will you find the necessary £2,000???

Let's all be glad that you are not Chancellor of the Exchequer, or the nation really would be bankrupt by now.

Play anything you like at a normal level, say -30dB on the volume control? Now suddenly change the volume control to -27dB, three decibels more powerful. Notice much of a difference? Thought not. You've just DOUBLED the power consumption, to not much effect. No human being could tell the difference, all other things being equal, between 170 watts and 180 watts.

By the way, this does not conflict with what bigboss said, when he said that going from 170 watts to 1700 watts would (subjectively, to the human ear because that transducer is horribly non-linear in its percived response to loudness) double the power. Increasing the actual power to 10 times results in what we, with our non-linear ears, think is twice as loud. But an actual doubling of power, increasing the volume control by three decibels, or going from 10W to 20W, is easy to subjectively miss.

I have tried turning the power up from -21db to -16db and it does get louder but -16db is like -22db on my old Pioneer 81 amp which is 180 watts instead of 170 watts. I also turned my sub up and that made a difference too, it made me jump when it first come on! *mosking*

How many -db do you guys go to? For music on master audio I am about -25db, DTS I am about -20db (which is seriously loud), movies I am now going for -18db - -16db! I suppose it is loud turning it up more just doesn't have something to it, for example it doesn't have power of voices coming from each individual speaker the way it was, to quote WHF it doesn't come gazelle like out of the speakers, it reaches the same volume by adding more -db though. I think I will just stick thinking about it. I haven't got any money troubles any more, but still need to be careful with my spending - I just bought my two nieces iPhones for birthday and Xmas presents and Easter presents too! That was going a bit crazy though by the end of next month I will have paid it off. My headphones were but of my birthday money too, and the blu-Ray player was only £40 extra. So I am still doing alright. Because I am on benefits it doesn't pay to have money savings (literally) if you have savings you lose your benefit, so I am spending now but being careful about it.

We could have Ed Balls - even worse. The man who created the banking crisis wants to borrow our way out of debt.
Hear, hear.

I would prefer not to hear or see you spending your benefits on technology. Is this not for food, rent etc?

I work very hard and pay my taxes accordingly to earn my income so that I can provide for my family and also purchase luxury items if I have anything left..

i am more than entitled to my benefits I only get a low amount compared to people who don't deserve it. So how I spend it is my business and no one else's!

But you have made it everyones business by posting on here about you being on benefits.

Also benefits are to help you live as has already been said, food and rent / mortgage not to waste away on luxury goods.

If you have money to burn then you probably do not need benefits in the first place and let someone else in need to have it.
Yes I deserve the money I like how your two are now experts on me just because I said I have bought some technology products. Now if you don't mind I won't mention it again to plaese you. But like I said it's none of your business, I don't tell you how to live. Mind your own!
