Is a Pioneer 50in plasma too big when sitting 6ft away?

So I was just about decided on the 42in Pioneer plasma when I saw an offer of an 8th Generation 50in Pioneer plasma for £1100. My question is that will sitting 6ft away from this screen be too close for comfort. I wondered if the 'smoother' plasma image is more tolerant of shorter viewing distances.

Comments please.

It's down to personal preference and eyesight. As an owner of the 42" Pio, I find it a bit close at 6ft even for watching HD, although it's borderline. I would certainly find it too close for watching SD. My guess is that I would find the 508XD massive at 6ft.

That is way to close. My seating position is 16ft(5m) for my 50in plasma, any closer and my eyes and neck take strain.

Apparently you have to sit closer than 10ft to see any difference with 1080p for a 50 inch. Also closer than 14.6ft to tell the difference between 720p & 480p. Can anyone confirm this?

I agonized about this question of screen size/distance, but plumped for a 4280 (42") instead of the 37" I'd originally been aiming for. Eye position is almost exactly 3m from the screen (just remeasured for you) which has proved perfect. ÿIf I move even a foot or two closer, I start to see the grain in HD pictures - still OK, but not quite as good IMHO.

Hi,

OK, I am 8ft 3" distance from my TV position - for both SD & HD is 50" still too big? What would be best/ideal viewing distance in my case?

Many Thanks!

I have a 40" and sit about 5 feet away and its fine, I think maybe 50" would be taking it a bit too far

Can anyone confirm this? This is what one of the guidelines say. For HD you should set between 1.5 and 2.5 x diagonal screen size. So for 50" it would be 2.5x50 =125", which is 10ft, maximum distance. (minimum distance would be 6ft). This is for Full HD panel and source.

But. it's only a technical guide and everyones eyes and tastes are different. You just have to get to the shops and view different sources at your chosen viewing distances. Some people like sitting on top of it, some like to view from afar.

I'd say yes for sure.

I sit around 6 feet away from my 37" and for that distance personally wouldnt want a bigger screen.

Fuzzy -

It is in Comet in Reading (just off the A33 going towards Reading from the M4 next to Morrisons and Halfords). It is the last one (ex-display) at 1169 (bargain).

i plan to buy a 37" LCD for my office and my viewing distance would be max 9 ft and the LCD would be mounted on brackets coming from the Ceiling. is the distance and the height of almost 7 ft from the floor convenient ?

Appreciate feedback and thanks in advance
