my son has noticed he can buy an iphone on an american site for about £119.00 or 199.oo dollars.would this phone work over here as its about half the price of the uk web sites.

Not sure, but less it's unlocked it may only work on one network - which until now has been 02 here. America do have their own unique 'cell' providers like AT&T etc. So it's probably not worth the risk really as you'll probably be charged customs, and if anything goes wrong, you'll have no warranty.
Probably locked to AT&T, the American carrier and wouldn't be compatible with O2 or Orange. Some say they can unlock they iPhone but as far as I am aware it invalidates the warranty and it could cause the phone to be 'bricked'. Hopefully when Vodafone begin selling it the prices should drop as competition increases unless they follow Orange's lead and price it exactly the same as O2.
