iPhone 5 into VW car head unit - advice ???

Hi all,

Firstly - note to WHF - why oh why does the posting system delete everything I have typed ? As in above ^ - can someone please explain - it is reaaaaaly driving me mad.

Rant over - heres my question.

I have an old VW Bora which is still going strong, complete with VW Gamma headunit and 6 cd disc player all mounted to centre dashboard.

I want to use my iphone in the car with the best sound quality available so therefore no fm transmitters.

Their are lots of adaptors on the market using aux in systems - some from £20+ , some up to £80 - all of which basically go into the port where the 6 disc changer gets plugged into. I am quite happy to do this myself and will happily substitute the 6 cd changer for just my iphone.

The question is - does anyone have any experience of these and if so what one is best ? The VW ones seem standard fair for all older VW's with Gamma head units.

I would like the thing to charge my iphone too.

This is what I am looking at presently - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Bora-iPod-interface-Adaptor-iPod-For-VW-Bora-/130401972453?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1e5c9030e5

But is any good ?

Anyone ????????

The link you provided specifically says the device doesn't support the iPhone - see the chart at the bottom of the page. Other similar devices only seem to support the iPhone when it's in 'Flight' mode.

More expensive ones such as this do seem to support iPhones, but it'd be worth checking whether this is only up to the iPhone 4/4S generation, or whether they'll work with the new phone with the Lightning connection, or indeed with the phone with a Lightning adapter.

This one, for example, does say specifically that it will work with, and charge the iPhone 5 via a Lightning adapter.

Assuming that's sorted, there's a number of YouTube vids covering such installations - looks pretty simple to me, in that it's a matter of pulling the head-unit, swapping a couple of plugs and then putting it all back together.

A VW Group 'stealer' - ie, VW, Seat, Audi or Skoda - can supply and fit an iPod/iPhone cable in the glovebox of all Golf Mk 4-based models - ie, Bora, Leon, TT, A3, Octavia - the cost, IIRC, is c. £100. And, as mentioned above, you'll need a Lightning adapter for a 5.

Thanks Andrew,

You obviously took the time to look for me and the bottom version ticks all the boxes. As helpful as ever, much appreciated.

That's my Xmas pressie from the wife sorted and it all looks pretty simple to install. I already have the lightning adaptor.

One last thing, you dont know why my posts text disappear on 1st attempt do you ? I have resorted to just posting a blank submission as it is really frustrating typing a post for it all to be erased. The quote or reply options never fail so I do it this way now. Does anyone else have this issue ?

Yes, others do, but no, I haven't a clue what causes it. Wish I did, because then we could fix it!
