Impossible Task? One Box

What I keep seeing on the forum's is to trust your own ears. Only you can hear (or not) musical nuances between different configurations of hifi components.

Yes, to a degree, but it's still useful to get a range of opinions including reviewers when you're drafting your shortlist. Not least, as often you'll need to plan ahead if you're going instore for a demo. The days of turning up and everything being available to dem are long gone.

Trying out at home is the best way, at least in my experience and for my needs, but not everyone necessarily wants that.

I really wouldn't put too much credence to WHF reviews, they operate within their own bubble.
Other credited reviewers have given the Play the thumbs up. The only requirement for those is matching them up with the right pair of speakers.

Turan a little smug at times but he is a mighty fine reviewer, he's analytical and thorough with his reviews.

My favourite Geordie (and only Geordie 🙂 ) reviewer.
Nice to be chilled when you're reviewing a product and this guy has an abundance of it 🙂!

This where I need to take my wife as the aesthetic side is her point of view whereas the musicality is mine so we have to come to a compromise.

Actives lessen the box count - or at least, they can do. Not in my home admittedly as I've several sources and you might need to consider a small subwoofer if you're going for the LSX II aforementioned (which also comes in a range of finishes).

Apart from the KEFs, they're Acoustic Energy's AE1 actives (but they're due an upgrade in or around November), and AV.com currently have a big discount on the JBL 4305P active down from £1200 to £799.

I was also looking at Elac's debut connex.

There are many excellent all-in-ones to match your budget. Why not seek out a Paris Audio model used/demo?
Thank you for the suggestion, although looking at the brand it's difficult to demo a product that is either an online retailer or a 4-5 hour drive just to get there. You'd think living near to the 2nd city you'd be inundated with options. Even nearest Richer Sounds is a 45 minute drive.

The Eversolo units design choice of having the cd drawer open at the side is a bit odd! Fine if it is on an open surface, but I suspect most people would want to use the space next to it to store e.g. CDs. I do, for one.

The drawer also looks too cheap to me. It's basically just the kind of CD-ROM drive you'd find on a desktop PC - fine if you're using it for ripping, but it would soon cheapen the experience for regular CD users.
