i-pod earphones

Well for starters ditch the awful Apple-supplied ones and buy a pair of Sennheiser CX300s, since they'll make music louder anyway by fitting in your ears properly and cutting outside noise. Then google for "ipod volume limit" - this is an issue for european ipods and can be resolved with some hacking or (allegedly) mucking about with volume of tracks in iTunes (the latter may be apocryphal, since I've heard of it not working).

agree about getting some decent `phones. To increase volume in I-tunes first highlight all your music, then right click, choose get info, there is an option for volume control, set it at about +50% as any more seems to distort.I-tunes will then process all the tracks and next time you sync volume should go louder.Any new music you add will have to be adjusted as well as the default setting is none. Also when you update I-tunes you will have to do this again as it seems to reset to none

My main point for posting in this thread, i just wanted to know if anyone has ever used a portable headphone amplifier. Im interested to know if I would get extra dynamics? Im only talking about minimal layout though, ive seen some about for £180 + I find that a bit extreme for a portable player.

So, anyone got opinions on them?

Good luck murgord, I hope they are the legit product, let us know how they sound please. Im tempted to get the CX300's myself.

May I suggest the following portable headphone amp available on ebay-(Portable Headphone Amplifier CMOY amp Headamp). I use this with all my headphones and the difference it makes has got to be heard. The cost of the amp is about £29.99 and £6.75 postage from Riga, Latvia,it should take between 10-14 days to arrive but is really worth the wait.

Thanks mahler, just what I was hoping to hear. the price range is exactly what I had in mind, and after your conclusion about the overall improvement i'll be purchasing one of those units. Cheers

The one I had before the Mcoy, was the HeadRoom Total AirHead which was not a bad amp, only problem was that if you increased the volume to much it would distort the sound but with the Mcoy I only need to have the volume half way and that is more than enough to fill my Grado60s and my Alessandro MS1, plus any of the other earphones I use, the Mcoy(for the money) has got to be one of the best investments to use with any portable player. Hope this helps.

Ah the plot thickens, how do you find theÿAlessandro MS1 compared to the Grado sr60?

As I have said many times on this site, the Alessandro MS1 produce a better sound than the Grado60s, the sound just opens up more and I can hear more detail, I really don't know how they do it but they do, also the Alessandros are cheaper $99 including postage. I keep asking the team to get hold of a pair and test them against the Grados but still waiting(come on Clare).

Are the Allessandros $99 including tax?

Tax and postage, as long as you inform Alessandro that they are a gift, you will not be charged import duty.

I've been using Westone UM2 Dual Driver Earphones (Clear) for the last 4 years with Sony NW-A608 and never felt like using any other earphone. The sound from the Westone UM2 is simply superb. I am not an audiophile but I sure enjoy what I listen to. Recently I purchased Shure SE310 and have fallen in love all over again. They are as good as the Westone UM2, if not better. And as they are in-ear types it might not suit everyones style or requirements. But once you are used to them then it is hard to get away from these in-ear phones. Both the above mentioned earphones are expensive but they are worth the money considering the aural pleasure you get listening to them.

I also bought an iPod Shuffle along with Sennheiser PX100 for my father-in-law and they are extremely comfortable for him (as he is over 70 yrs) and he's very pleased with over-the-ear phones.

Regards.

Since I got my Ipod Classic last year I have tried several pairs of IEM's (Bose, Shure, Sennheiser and Klipsch) to get better sound, more volume, bass, etc. Think I now have my answer.

Just received a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 studio IEM's. Left them connected to my hi-fi for a few days to burn in and finallly used them with my Ipod (EU model) today.

I found that the twin flanged tips fitted me better, offering far better isolation than my old Shure E2c's. Could not hear of any of my fellow commuters on the train this morning. Because of this I no longer have to have the volume on the Ipod turned up to the max. Had it on about 50% volume and the sound was clear, detailed and plenty loud enough. Bass is tight but is more heard than felt which is not a problem for me but if you like bass heavy music you may need to look elsewhere. I listen to mainly Indie, Alternative, Alt Country and they sounded great with Apple Lossless files.

Had them in for about four hours and almost forgot they were there. Very comfortable and for £50, a bit of a bargain.

For anyone using an ipod which just doesn't play loud enough -even after upgrading the headphones to in ears- there are ways to disable the volume limiter.

Here's a start: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/remove_max_volume_limit_apple_ipod.html
(some comments under the article in question have some alternative routes to take)

Just remember it's all at your won risk- although if you have a copy of all your5 files in your pc/mac , there's not much to loose..
